Although I have had no more from the Kendal marriage register, I got a copy of a Roll of men who signed on for the Westmorland Militia in 1779. As a result I now know how tall this ancestor was, colour of hair, eyes and complexion. His age when signing led me to his baptism, then to his parents' marriage and probably his mother's baptism. Yippee!

I love it when you get that sort of description, which is not often, what a pity there couldn't have been a photograph also, but well done.

Think we are distant cousins. My 4xgt grandparents were John Grant & Ann Knipe. I came across this web site the other day and was extremely interested to find you had the same Grant family as I have. I have been trying to find out about John Grant from the Enrolment List of the Westmorland Militia 1779 and have been in touch with Cumbria Archives, Carlisle who sent my email to Kendal. They don't have the info at Kendal so I've been in touch with Carlisle again but so far have not had a reply. Can you please tell me if John's parents were James Grant & Rebecca Nelson? Another distant cousin and I think they are but it is only a guess. Hope to hear from you. Ruth

Welcome to the forum, and probably to the family! Good to hear that someone is on the same lines. I believe you are right about the Grant & Nelson link. I will get at my details and reply more fully later. Where are you based? I am in Liverpool.

Thanks for your reply. I live on the south coast in Emsworth, which is near to Portsmouth so a long way from Liverpool but I was born in Lancashire. Here's hoping that we've been right about James Grant and Rebecca Nelson. We've found 3 of their children but we're pretty sure that they did have more but so far haven't found any but maybe some of John's brothers were militiamen too.

I've had problems with my pc locking up, but I hope I have unstuck it. All being well I shall get something together tomorrow.
I have been to Emsworth long ago, very pretty, I remember, but possibly changed.
