His name was Percival Carman. He was the younger brother of Benjamin Carman who was best man at my parents' marriage in 1922. They lived in Newcombe Street.

Thanks MaryA & Simone some good ideas there. I also had found a William Curran, but as yet I hadn't been able to slot him in anywhere.

This marriage certificate like some others I have come across gives the same address for the bride and groom - often the bride's home. Surely they weren't ALL lodgers!! Was this an ecclesiastical issue - so that both 'appeared' to live in the same parish? Any suggestions.

What a small world!

While I'm on does anyone know what was the occupation termed 'Clerk in Holy Orders'? This was the occupation of Wm. James.

Clerk in Holy Orders - ordained person of the Church of England
He's a vicar somewhere! Try looking him up in either Crockford's Directory of the 1920s or the Liverpool or Cheshire directories of the time.

I think he could be in Ellesmere Port area around 1910. He appears to have been born in Rowley Regis Staffs.

The probate indexes have the following

JAMES the Reverend William of the vicarage Barnston Cheshire clerk died 9 May 1932. Probate Liverpool 23 June 1932 to Ellen Sissons James widow. Effects £446 9s 11d

Barnston church has a website and a list of their burials William is buried in their graveyard but there is no gravestone. There may be a memorial in the church I don't know.

Yes brides and grooms often "moved" where they lived so that the banns would only need to be called in one parish, saved money. There were also those who "moved" to a friend's house - perhaps just leaving a suitcase in the hall - so that they could be married in a particular church.

Thank you MaryA for the explanations. It makes prefect sense when you think about it, but a bit of a bind for those of us trying to trace were they 'really' lived! Just never gave us a thought did they?

On Monday 10th I posted a request for help for Ellen Sissons ELSTON. Only 3 days later I have found that she did indeed marry at the age of 42y - a vicar, William JAMES. They lived at Barnston Church vicarage for 10 years (1922-1932) until his death. Ellen lived for a further 23 years.

Today I visited the church in Cheshire where I saw that both are buried together with a large monument of a cross close to the alter end of the church.

Thank you to everyone who helped in the search.

My next step is to contact the parish office and learn more about of their lives. I have already started to investigate William's birthplace by checking the excellent Rowley Regis website.
