Seaman 'Mate' - murdered in the Far East
Seaman 'Mate' - murdered in the Far East
Hello everyone. I'm hoping that you may help me with the removal of a brick wall as you have been very helpful to me in the past. My grandma's brother, John IBBOTSON, I found on the 1911 census in the seamans home. I know he was murdered abroad, possibly China (verbal history) but not when. I have been in touch with Southampton to find details of his Seagoing records and they suggested looking at the Coroner's records in Liverpool which I have, not quite finishing the second reel. I find it difficult due to family commitments to get over to Liverpool regularly now and wonder whether you may be able to help. John was born in 1867 in Waterloo. The 1881 census he was at school in Yorkshire, after that I found him on 1911. Thanks. Averil

If he was murdered abroad in the early part of the 20th century I doubt his body would have been returned to the UK or an inquest held here. Have you checked the deaths abroad index of the GRO?
When is John thought to have died? I cam't see John in 1911 is the home in Liverpool?

No John Ibbotson (or variants) in the British Nationals died overseas index.

Re: Seaman 'Mate' - murdered in the Far East
Thanks for replies. I have looked at the GRO deaths abroad to no avail.
1911 Census lists the Boarding House of the Sailor's Home, Canning Place.
John Ibbotson, aged 44, single, Merchant Service, is show on page 3, no. 21.
I don't know what year he died, so 1911 is my starting point. My grandmother wrote to the shipping company (not known) asking for his effects but nothing was forthcoming. Hope that helps, I am sorry I don't know anything else. Averil

A couple of our forum members have made a little headway looking for their seamen, do read some of their suggestions http://www.forum.liverpool-genealogy.or ... 30&t=12042 and see if they can be of any help to you.

Although you say he was in the Merchant Navy it is possible that only a few years later he may have been seconded to the Royal Navy for the war.
