Location of Wavertree, St Michael?
Location of Wavertree, St Michael?
The website Lancashire BMD shows a marriage in 1866 between Henry Plumpton and Bridget Oates at a church it describes as Wavertree, St Michael (according to freeBMD this marriage was in the 2nd quarter of 1866). My interest is whether one of the witnesses might be Robert Plumpton, the subject of another of my recent posts.
Does anybody know which church this record might be referring to?
I cannot find any church in Wavertree of this name. There is a St Michael-in-the-Hamlet in Aigburth whose registers are on Lan-OPC, but a search revealed the marriage was not at this church. Could it be the St Michael at Garston?
You can probably tell by now that this Widnesian’s knowledge of Liverpool geography is not up to much!

Garston seems a fair bet, but there is also St Michael in the City, Nile Street or thereabouts, rebuilt after WW2 when it was blitzed.

I think we have come across this query previously and it was found that it was the church in Garston, classed as being in the Wavertree area.

Re: Location of Wavertree, St Michael?
Thanks to everybody, especially Blue for the image. It is difficult to read the witnesses but it looks like James (something) and Mary (something), so the Robert Plumpton I am looking for was not there.
Can anybody read the name of the groom's father? If the groom Henry is the one I thought he was then he was illegitimate, but the father looks like (something) Plumpton.

Egerton, agree.
Re: Location of Wavertree, St Michael?
No sign of an Egerton Plumpton in censuses, BMD, etc. Perhaps this is the marriage of the illegitimate Henry and he was trying to disguise the fact.

Re: Location of Wavertree, St Michael?
1881(Ann bn Ire) & 1891 census Henry in Arthur St, wife is listed as Ann so I'm guessing she was Bridget Ann as her age is correct with marriage, she was older than Henry.
Both listed born Halewood. Perhaps a squizz at the Plumpton's in the area may bring up Hy or his father.
I like Ancestry's transcription of his father as Everton, how patriotic is that!

Re: Location of Wavertree, St Michael?
Sumffink or Nuffink??
1841 census has a Betsy Plumpton (quite an unusual surname)
30 yrs living in Halewood, Naylors Lane
2 children Emily 2, John 4.
Head of house is Wm Layland 50.
Perhaps she was his housekeeper?
John continues on through census, 13 in 1851 a farm servant in Halewood.
I don't think the Elizabeth bn to people in Farnborough is the one.

Just a comment on Garston parish church. They've been without a vicar for a few years but a new one will arrive in December.

Re: Location of Wavertree, St Michael?
Thanks for your input Tina. Henry is possibly the (much) younger brother of the Robert Plumpton I am interested in, both were born illegitimately to an Elizabeth Plumpton in Halewood (see http://www.forum.liverpool-genealogy.or ... =2&t=12136).
I agree she seems old to have been having Henry at 45. I wonder if her age in the 1851 census (48) is an error by the head of household or the enumerator. In 1841 (if she was the Betty in the household of Wm Layland) she was listed as 30, so could have been up to 34 years old, so in 1851 should have been no older than 44. This would mean having Henry at no older than 41.
