Grice Family of Ormskirk

Post by allanpshepherd123 »

I was recently talking to a cousin Alan Grice of Ormskirk after giving him some family photographs of his immediate family that were amongst photographs that had been handed down from my mum and dad. I had not seen Alan since he attended my mum's funeral in December 1980 so I thought it only right that he should have them. I spoke of fond memories of visiting his dad's cabinet making shop (Frank Grice and Sons) with my parents as a very young child and seeing his dad working in his workshop.

He said that he had researched the Grice family tree back to 1699 and was I aware that there was a headstone in St Peter and St Paul's church in Ormskirk with the inscription "Will Grice died May 3rd 1699" which we understand to be the oldest headstone in the church. I did ask him for any information he had but he has not been in touch.

My mum is Lucy Grice born 05/02/1913 died 19/12/1980. Her parents were Hugh Grice born 20/01/1876 died 31/08/1955 and Ellen Maria Grice nee Rowson born 03/07/1886 died 27/08/1945.

Any family out there?

Best Regards
Allan

There doesn't appear to be a member of the Society by that name, however there is somebody researching the name Grice in the Ormskirk area. You can check this on our Society page, linked from the globe at the top.

Your enquiry as to "any family out there" might reach a wider group if you posted on our Facebook group.

Hello MaryA

I have checked the Society page linked from the "globe" under Grice and nothing is available. Would you know who is reseaching the Grice name in the Ormskirk area, is it Lesley?

Facebook is a no no with my wife, if I posted on the Facebook group would an account be needed?

Best Regards
Allan

Click on the Globe on this page

Then on the main page of the society click on searches

Then click on Members interest and input Grice and you will find others researching Grice.

Are you wanting help with finding earlier Grice's than Hugh? Hugh appears to have been born in Liverpool with possible parents William and Mary Ellen.

Hello Hilary and MaryA

Many thanks for replying. I have followed the links that Hilary has given and found the list of names which I will look into more detail later tonight to see who is researching Grice.

Regarding my research any help would be greatly appreciated. What I have in addition to previous information so far is;

From birth certificates that I have Hugh Grice was born 20/01/1876 to William Grice and Mary Ellen Grice (nee Ni?ons cannot fully read birth certificate surname) at 97 Elias Street Everton and Ellen Maria Grice (nee Rowson) was born 03/07/1886 to Francis Rowson and Anne Rowson (nee Steverns) at 123 Gregson Street Everton. I know from death certificates that my grandfather/grandmother resided at 52 County Road Ormskirk when my grandmother Ellen Maria died in 1945 and my grandfather Hugh resided at 198 Southport Road when he died in 1955.

The easiest way? for me to find all of the information is to contact my cousin Alan Grice again but I respect his privacy (had not see him since 1980) and all the hard work and cost over time he has incurred in tracing Will Grice back to 1699.

1699 is a long long way back, about how many great great.... grandfathers is Will Grice to me?

Best Regards
Allan

It's fun to do it yourself you never know someone else may have it wrong.

You'll be able to access Ancestry in Skelmersdale library. However to get you started

1881 census 76 Rose Place Liverpool
William Grice head 33 bn leicestershire
Mary Ellen 33
Harriet ellen 13
William Thomas 7
Hugh 5
Joseph 1

everyone else born Liverpool

William consistently gives Leicestershire as his place of birth but the actual town changes.

Allan I've got the MI CD for St Peters & St Paul Ormskirk & have found Will Grice's inscription. All it has is PT18
1669 WILL GRICE buried 5 May
PT18 is the area & grave number. Here is a plan of the cemetery if youve not got it & I have circled PT in red

Hello Hilary
Many thanks for the information regarding William Grice/Mary Ellen Nixon and Skelmersdale library of which I am a member. I will order their marraige certificate from the GRO and work backwards hopefully to 1699, what a journey that will be.

Hello LindaS
Many thanks for the map and information. I had visited the grave of Will Grice from the information that Alan Grice had previously given me on the visit I spoke of. Also at the same time spoke to some guy who apparently is the "tour guide" of the church who was most helpful.

All information greatly appreciated as ever.

Best Regards
Allan
