Unfortunately not - most churches are marked and some schools but I have tried to access Public buildings and there appears to be nothing.

It's a few years since I have heard 'The Barracks' mentioned, my hubbies x2 g.father Robert Waddington lived there 1871 census.
It wasn't a Barracks as in Army, possibly a nickname by locals?
Remember talking to a family connection who had researched it.
From what she said, it was where the 'very poor' people lived.. It was grim!
I can remember she also said that folk from outside the 'Barracks' looked down on them, even though they didn't have much themselves.. must have been grim.

sounds like Monty Python
well it's my age!
Had a book about it but for the life of me I cannot remember where it is
I will try and put the other part of my brain in gear and find it.
Hope it helps,

It may have been a Territorial headquarters. I will try to find an old file, or someone might look at an old directory, where army hqs were listed at the back.

thank you for the prompt replies. I was rather hoping that it might have housed the Royal Marines around 1890 1900

Do you mean this was marked on a map? rather than listed as a database?brisam wrote:Unfortunately not - most churches are marked and some schools but I have tried to access Public buildings and there appears to be nothing.

Thank you everyone
The Barracks are marked as a black square on the Liverpool History Project maps (ref L7/M7).
My interest in them is that John Woodhouse who we are researching was a Royal Marine from Portsmouth born in Poplar London. He gave his address in 1899, at the time of his marriage, as William Henry Street (M7 on the map) which is relatively near the Barracks. I wondered if the Barracks were at that time a military establishment and he was stationed there.
His spouse Frances Mary/Mary Frances Johnson gave her address as Montague Street (O7 on the map). Curiously, they were married in Blackburn on 1 May 1899 with Frances Mary giving her age as 21 when she was actually only 19! At a guess she had to have parental permission to marry They had a son Sidney born 1900, but I think it was the July quarter, which rules out her being pregnant at the time of the marriage.
