Thanks for posting that record. Is there any other document explaining why John was reduced in rank from sergeant to corporal in July 1903 after holding the senior rank for 7 years? And is there a separate Discharge document indicating discharge after completion of term of enlistment or at his own request, etc?

I believe that Starfield Street address may be connected to the Next of kin note near the top of the page:"Next of Kin (wife) at address below", and not to his address after discharge. There does seem to have been some over-writing immediately above the address where the last date is written.

This is all we have on the man at this time. And are unable to give a reason for his reduced rank.

I also can not find the Liverpool Cemetery that James d 1913 or William Costley are buried in.

Sorry no sign of a baptism, nor marriage for Frances and William for that matter, but LancsBMD has it down as Liverpool, Register Office or Registrar Attended.

Can you explain this please.

Do you have this marriage certificate?

William Costley married Frances Woodhouse
Registration district: Liverpool
Year/qtr of registration: 1919 / Apr-May-Jun
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 223.

Does she refer to herself as widow on this marriage cert?

I checked Ancestry to see if there was a copy of the Parish Register for either the baptism you were searching for or this marriage, without success.

Then I checked http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ which gave the marriage as "Liverpool, Register Office or Registrar Attended".

This means that the marriage didn't take place in a C of E Church, although it might have taken place in an RC or non Conformist church. In view of the date and complications previously, my suspicions are that they probably actually went to the Register Office to get married.

To obtain the certificate in this instance you would need to apply to either the Liverpool Register Office or the GRO which is easier and you can do this online at www.gro.gov.uk , using the reference Dickiesam has given and it will cost you £9.25.

You are very welcome. One of the most important aspects of collecting information is to check the original source because you never know what else you may find besides the accuracy of transcriptions into online databases. Marriage certs are often a great help in teasing out events because there are fathers' names and occupations as well as the names of witnesses.

Now, flying a kite here...
I noted that John Woodhouse did not have a trade or profession when he enlisted in the RM. He is down as a labourer and apart from military 'trades' he is unlikely to have learned any civvy skills. There's only one JW, labourer, in London in the last census. He has been married to Adelaide, formerly Tucker, [probably nee Savage] for 3 years.

WOODHOUSE, John married TUCKER, Adelaide [she is a widow, see below].
Registration district: Mile End Old Town, London
Year/qtr of registration: 1908 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume no: 1C; Page no: 489.

SAVAGE, Adelaide married TUCKER, Charles.
Registration district: St. Saviour Southwark, London
Year/qtr of registration: 1880 / Apr-May-Jun
Volume no: 1D; Page no: 147.

Adelaide and her spouse Charles are in the 1901 at RG13 - 335 - 9 - 9, with 7 children.
Adelaide's spouse Charles dies in 1903.
Death: TUCKER, Charles
Registration district: Mile End Old Town, London
Year/qtr of registration: 1903 / Apr-May-Jun
Age at death: 48
Volume no: 1C; Page no: 251.

At least 3 of the children listed as Woodhouse in the last census were Tucker in the 1901; John Tucker bn 1889, Phillip bn 1894, and Frederick bn 1896, and there's strong probability that another 2 were also Tucker. The remaining 2 have probably flown the coop in the meantime.

Now, interestingly, John Woodhouse says in error [and deleted by the enumerator] that he had 3 children born to a previous marriage. Could they be Sidney, William and Amelia born to Frances and in the 1901 and later?

That John Woodhouse may be a bigamist is now on the cards and the location fits with the death I found earlier.
Death: WOODHOUSE, John
Registration district: Poplar, London
Year/qtr of registration: 1917 / Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death: 47
Volume no: 1C; Page no: 527.

I have a birth certificate for William Raymond Woodhouse dob 4.8.1902 at 4 Pennington Street, Walton UD

Birth registered 30.8.1902 by Frances Woodhouse formerly Johnson with the father listed as John Woodhouse, Sergeant Royal Marines

He was on the 'Aboukir' from April to end July and then spent 1903 on the Venerable, Speedy, Hibernian, Diadem
The embarkations listed on the service record could have been either actual ships or naval shore stations. Can anyone tell me which was which.

Hi,
This site might help http://www.crewlist.org.uk/data/vesselsnum.php
Select 'Vessels by name' from the left-hand menu.

Thank you for the reference

Can you tell me where I might find John Woodhouses's re-enlistment in the royal Marines or a service record for the First World War. Could you tell me how I find the complete medals reference please.

Can you tell me if William Raymond and parents John & Frances are related to the original post or merely a coincidence?

Could you tell if these ships were Portsmouth based. If they were Liverpool based it would be very interesting? Presumably Hibernian was a shore station at Portsmouth?
Would it be possible to give me the site references please.

A tip!
When you google the ship's name prefix it with HMS... for example HMS Diadem.

Here's another page for HMS Diadem. Scroll down..

I have found that this John Woodhouse was married previously to someone called Elizabeth and they appear to have had three children so this may very well not be our John Woodhouse. I found the reference on another public family tree but unfortunately I can't get back to see what it was.
