Simone - thanks for your research. Before I posed this problem on the forum, I thought I had 'cracked' it when I found a few records for a Whalley family in Rainford which seemed to tick all the right boxes, including a son Joseph of about the right age but I came unstuck when the relevant census returns revealed the head of family to be a Thomas Whalley. The key document relating to Joseph's marriage records Robert as his father's name! This is at the heart of my problem as I can't find a Robert Whalley with a son Joseph in the right period!

I'll probably follow up the birth records for the two Joseph Whalley's in 1854 and 1858, (dickiesam had flagged up these for me too) and try to establish whether one of them had a father called Robert, and if neither do, then I will have to question the 1881 census record I've been using for Joseph which is the only one I have found prior to his marriage two years later, which has the right name, age, location, job - and indicates a place of birth i.e. Rainford.

Simone,

Had a look at those birth ref's.

Looking at the original:
Prescot March 1856 8b 505 certainly looks like Male Whalley to me.

The other one Joseph Whilley Prescot Sept 1856 8b 434

Looking at the original: For me it brings up nearly a page full of female Wilsons.. about 3 males on there.. also Wilson

This one has me beat.. but Joseph's marr certainly says Robert as his father:

Marriage: 23 Jul 1883 St George, Everton, Lancashire, England
Joseph Whally - 28 Carter Bachelor of 29 Abraham St
Mary Ann Clark - 23 Spinster of 16 Abraham St
Groom's Father: Robert Whally, House Servant
Bride's Father: Duncan Clark, Brick Maker
Witness: William Bishpham; Jane Bourke
Married by Banns by: W. H. Woodward
Register: Marriages 1882 - 1886, Page 75, Entry 150
Source: LDS Film 2147879

Have spent a while this afternoon.. am going round in circles, nothing new there lately

going gaga

Very good insights there girls, particularly Paul needs to keep an open mind as to whether a name was given at the marriage ceremony to cover the possibility of illegitimacy and a blank space on the certificate.

However, if you do intend to pursue the births, please make sure that when you order the certificate, whichever one, you specify that you only want it IF the father's name is correct, then if it isn't at least they won't charge you.
