Mary or Molly

Post by simone »

Hi

I have Thomas Rudd in my tree, not totally sure of birth date but married Alice Eccleston in 1814 and son Thomas Eccleston Rudd was baptised 1817, so I've been reckoning around 1780/85.

The Liverpool records on Ancestry has a Thomas , son of Thomas a Mariner, baptised at St James 1789, residence Toxteth Park, mother Mary.

2 more baptisms of James 1784 and Joseph 1786, both have Thomas a mariner as father, but although Joseph has Mary as mother, James has Molly as mother. Realise that maybe Thomas may have married twice, not found any marriages so far, but has anyone ever heard of a Mary being called by Molly or vice versa..

Thanks

Hi Simmo, Molly is an established name now but according to Google it was a nickname for Mary from the Middle Ages.

Me again Simmo, in Lancs OPC all were baptised at St James.
James has a middle name of Shaw, so perhaps a clue to Mary/Molly's maiden name?
Cheers

Hi Simone,

My Sister-in law was named Mary but was always known as Molly. A lot of people thought Molly was her given name.

Cheers!
