Trouble find my Grandfather's Date of Death

Post by Sukuma »

I would like to to find out where my grandfather is buried, but I don't know his date of death. I have tried searches through various forums including BMD, findmypast and goodness knows how many internet searches, but not had much luck. His name was Thomas Gibson (a popular name), born in 1882. I know he was still alive in 1946, as he registered my Grandmother's death and he purchased a grave at West Derby cemetary where she is buried, but he is not there. All of his children have passed away and most of them are at Anfield Cemetary. I contacted West Derby cemetary to confirm the grave, but without his date of death they are unable to advise any further. I don't have any relatives who can give me further details. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Blue79 and Tina

Thanks so much. How did you find the information?

I believe that there was 2 Thomas Gibson's born in 1883 and 1 in 1882 registered in West Derby. I had thought that the born date was Sept 1882, but I will need to check whether it is the right one, as I don't have exact confirmation as I took the information from finding Census data from 3 consecutive decades, so it could be that it is 1883.

I am not aware of the middle initial H. I have found in the Census information the three family lines, with one parent having the name Henry and the other 2 have the head of the family as Thomas.

Henry H as a child, lived in Everton, (taken from Census information) and my father did mention to me many years ago that he lived in Everton as a child, before WW II and he tried to find the street back in the early 1980s. I thought he was just not remembering correctly, but having tried to find Henry H's address in Everton, it doesn't appear to exist any more. Although my father had his youth in Everton, it doesn't mean that his father was brought up there aswell, so it may be a red herring.

I was brought up abroad, so there was no contact with family in the UK, though I do have a memory that my father told me when I was young, that his father had died, which suggests the Thomas H, but again it may be a another red herring.

I have ordered a marriage certificate for my grandfather that I knw is correct and waiting for that to arrive. Hopefully that will give me more information.

It's really interesting doing these searches.

Thanks again.

Was Thomas Gibson's wife Margaret Elizabeth Lloyd? They married at St. Augustine C of E in Everton in 1906. Margaret died 7 March 1946 she was the wife of Thomas Gibson, Labourer. Address: 132 East Lancashire Road L11 (near to West Derby Cemetery). Probate (Administration): effects of £173 13s 1d to Thomas Gibson.

The family were at 31 Sleepers Hill Anfield Liverpool in 1911. Thomas was born about 1883 and was a Carter at this time. Other occupants: wife Margaret, children Eve and Alice and John Lloyd probably Margaret's brother.

Assuming Thomas died in Liverpool there are only 2 deaths that fit with a birth year of 1882 +/- 2 years and death year between 1948 and 1982. Tina and Blue have already found them.

Name: GIBSON, Thomas H
Registration district: Liverpool
Year.qtr of registration: 1948 / Apr-May-Jun
Age at death: 66
Volume no: 10D; Page no: 279.

Name: GIBSON, Thomas
Registration district: Liverpool
Year/qtr of registration: 1974 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Date of Birth: 16 September 1882
Volume no: 10D; Page no: 632.

The latter would fit with this birth:
GIBSON, Thomas
Registration district: West Derby
Year/qtr of registration: 1882 / Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 573.

All,

Thanks so much for your help.

The marriage cert arrived this morning. Yes, Thomas Gibson married Margaret Elizabeth Lloyd, address Sleepless Hill, and his father was called Thomas, thus whereas Thomas H's father was called Henry. Using the ages dates on the things I have found his birth would have between June 1882 and April 1883, thus Sept 1882 fits in that timeframe. :)

Best wishes

Good work guys!
1891 census 2 Back Mulberry St, Mt Pleasant
Thomas Gibson 34 carter, Mary 32, both bn Lpool
Alfred 10 bn Bhead, Thomas 8, Johnson 7, Wm 5, Alice 3 all bn Lpl.
I would ignore all the women listed as boarders, they couldn't possibly have lived with them,
Anx have crossed over to the women in Mt Pleasant workhouse I reckon.
The family are in Everton in 1901 if you need them.

Hi Tina

Thanks for your post. I spent last night looking further back and come up with the same conclusion with the family on Black Mulberry Street though I wasn't certain. Having someone else do the same thing seperately from me, increases my confidence  You are all certainly very active in helping people.

Best wishes
