Hi, I have a relative 1881 census Liverpool Robert Lemuel Kelly, where born, it appears to read Carr, Ireland. Anyone any idea where in Ireland this is?.
Cheers Carol .

Re: Irish place
For anybody looking to help, the details from the 1881 census are
32 Pengwern Street, Toxteth Park
William Cottrell Head M 44 Police Constable Neston, Cheshire
Margaret Eliza Wife M 39 Constable's Wife formerly Dressmaker Liverpool, Lancashire
Robert Lemuel (transcribed Samuel) Kelly Brother In Law Unm 47 Miller Carr Ireland
RG11; Piece: 3646; Folio: 69; Page: 56
Marriage on 4th October, 1864 at St Simon, Liverpool
William Cottrell Full age Bachelor Ship Wright Residence St Simons
Father Peter Cottrell Porter
Margaret Eliza Kelly Full age Spinster Residence St Simons
Father Peter Kelly Solicitor
Both signed their names
Witnesses William Tilston and Ann Cottrell
Do you have the Cottrells in 1871? I have a family in Garston, places of birth match but the dates are way out as is William's occupation, however Margaret claims to have been born in Speke. Presumably at some point Robert's parents must have immigrated to England between the births of the two.

Re: Irish place
I believe there's a dotted i in the name and it is CAIN. The one I know is in County Wexford and Google have it pinpointed here: https://maps.google.ie/maps?hl=en&q=cai ... Re: Irish place
Good one DS, it does look like a dot over an i. Putting Cain, Ireland in googlemaps shows only the one in Wexford, nowhere else.

Re: Irish place
Don't know if you already have this. On 1891 census Robert L Kelly is married to Mary E, daughters Mary 3, Ellen 1. His place of birth given as Liverpool, he is a miller. Also death of Robert Lemuel Kelly in 1894. Moya

Hello everyone,
Once again you lot have come up trumps, thanks to all that replied.
I have been a member for many, many years why haven't i used this Forum before, could have saved myself a lot of time.
Now i have the census mentioned and the marriage of Margaret to William, I haven't seen the one where she states Speke, only that she lived in Henry street in Liverpool, her dad Peter stated on another child's marriage (James to Margaret Shaw in 1844) that he was a Superintendant of the West of England Fire Engine, I did search for years trying to find records to back this up, I was told all the records had been destroyed in a fire in London, then Peter was a Book keeper, and then a solicitor, he was either a very well educated man or he lived in cuckoo land.
Did you have any relatives that moved to the Isle of Man, as Maragert and William Cotterall did?.
Looking at the magnification of what i thought was Carr certainly hits me in the face that it is Cain, well done!
I do have the census showing R.L.Kelly and Mary Ellen and the kids. Thanks.
Thanks again.
Carol
