Post by Sue H »

Hi Folks

Am now stuck with Sara West Jones resting place. Death certificate I have states she died 20th June 1936 her address was 48 Thames Street. I did think she would be buried in the grave with her husband, William Jones, son John William Davies (she had remarried after the death of William Davies, John and Charles father) but I cant find in her. Once again could anyone help Many thanks Sue

Can you tell me if Thames Street is north or south Liverpool please? it's a street I haven't come across.

and what religion was Sara?

No sign of her at Toxteth perhaps at Allerton? I'm still waiting for a response to my e-mail to the council cemeteries person I usually contact hopefully that should clear up whether there are still free look-ups for enquiries with full details provided. Otherwise it will involve a fee. I'm presuming that a burial record for council cemeteries such as Allerton for 1936 won't be in the record office if anyone knows different please let us know.

Hi Mary, she was married in St Nicholas Church in Liverpool on 5th August 1877. Her sons were baptised at St Nathaniels in Windsor, Lancaster, the address given as 60 Liffey Street (which I thought was Liverpool). Strange I would have thought she would have been in the family grave in Toxteth but now explains why I couldnt find her. I was wondering if she had been buried with her second husband William Jones but cant find him either

Also in the family grave in Toxteth is an ELIZABETH DAVIES Birth 1878 -Death Jul 1891 I have looked for her as the child of Sara West Davies (ne Smart) and William Davies, and can not find her. Have accounted for all the others.........can anyone help me

Thank Blue70 for trying to solve this

In case you are confused about this, Windsor is an area in Toxteth Park, Lancaster really just means Lancashire, not the town, so the St Nathaniels and Liffey Street are in Liverpool.

Search http://maps.google.co.uk/ for Liffey Street and then scroll towards the east and you will see where Toxteth Park Cemetery was, likely the nearest, so surprising that she wasn't there.

In the 1891 census there is a widowed Mary Davies, age 39 and child Elizabeth 14, boarding with an Isaac and Margaret Neill and their son at 50 Prince William Street, Toxteth Park. RG12; Piece: 2925; Folio: 26; Page: 46. Have you checked to see if this Mary could have been married to a brother of Sarah's husband?

The baptism for this Elizabeth is possibly 13th September, 1878 at Holy Trinity, Toxteth Park, to Michael and Mary Davies, occupation Labourer, address 27 Henderson Street.

Hi Sue,

Elizabeth Davies' address at death was 1 Palmerston Road. In a different grave in TP is a Thomas Davies who died in 1894 aged 22 and also lived at 1 Palmerston Road. Buried with Thomas is a William Davies - boot maker - his address is 48 Palmerston Road.

This looks like the family in 1881:
13 Holden Street, West Derby
William Davies Head M 48 Boot Maker Denbigh, Denbighshire
Elizabeth Wife M 44 Boot Binder Lancashire Manchester
James Son Unm 21 Plumber " "
Edward " " 15 Painter Flintshire, Ruthin
Mary Ann daur Unm 14 Domestic " "
Annie " 12 Scholar " "
Henry son 11 " Cheshire, Frodsham
Thomas " 9 " Lancashire, Liverpool
Richard " 7 " " "
Elizabeth daur 4 " " "
RG11; Piece: 3706; Folio: 37; Page: 20

I wonder if these could be the parents and siblings of William Davies, husband of Sara West Smart?

Hi Alison

Linking William and Elizabeth as mother and father to William Davies (sara west davies hubby)..........I think the Elizbeth in the grave in Toxteth is William jnr's youngest sister (could be wrong !)............what I have found to my astonishment is that James Davies brother to william jnr married Sara West Davies(ne Smart) sister Elizabeth Georgina Smart!! Palmarston Road also rings a bell with the Smart family, but they are so big will have to go back and look again...............so while the snooker is on tonight will have a mooch around

Check the newspapers for an obituary, sorry not online at that date, it will need to be the Record Office, Liverpool Echo on microfilm.
