Registrars

I understand my g g grandfather was a Registrar in Liverpool/West Derby area. I know they were still in Ireland early 1870's as the births of some of their children are listed on Family Search.

Has anyone come across any information available which lists Registrars of BMD?

Well that's the first time I've come across one, that's pretty exciting to think he registered so many of the records we are researching.

I wonder if the Register Office themselves would hold any records? There are contact links http://liverpool.gov.uk/births-marriage ... tnerships/ if not I certainly hope they know what they have done with them.

Thank you, Mary, for that suggestion. I will send an email or telephone them in the morning. I noticed that some of the directories did have Registrars listed at the beginning of each area but that is such a long painstaking way of trying to find out.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is true that he was a Registrar. I will let you know what reply I receive though.

His name:

William Stewart/Stuart Wade
born c 1824, possibly Ardee County Louth
Death:
4 November 1890, 7 Gladstone Road, Walton
Age 66 years.

His death was registered on same day as his death 4 November 1890 (which I thought unusual).
and the Deputy Registrar of Walton signed the death certificate

Although he was listed on the death certificate as a Book Keeper, but on other paperwork as a Registrar.

Would there be more than one type of Registrar. Had he retired from being a Registrar to take up book keeping?

p.s. While researching I have come across a William Shiels Wade who I thi nk may be a son, but I have not confirmed this properly as yet - just in case you get confused.

He may have died in the infirmary so the Deputy Registrar registered the death, I suppose he might do this on a daily basis, looking after the hospital.

Please give us the years that he has been noted as Registrar as we may come across him on certificates etc.

I don't have anything left which states he is a registrar during his lifetime. I lost my hard drive last year, and my back-up did not work so I lost a lot of research.

The only thing I have in hard copy is post-death. My g grandmother married twice and on her second marriage in 1898 Father's name: William Stuart Wade (deceased), Profession: Registrar. On the first marriage in 1890 He was listed as a 'Gentleman'. This was a month after he passed away.

I have a feeling I had seen it in the directories, but we don't have Liverpool directories here in Wales.

The family have always lived in the West Derby area: Kirkdale, Everton, Walton, Anfield etc. since coming from Ireland (which was in early 1870's). Possibly the wife was Mary Shiels (but not confirmed that yet). I have been trying to trawl the probate records too.

Having recently retired I am trying to pin down the family on my fathers' side which have always been elusive.

Just had a reply to my email to Liverpool Register Office:

"Dear Sheila,
Thank you for your email.
Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive list of past registrars for the District of Liverpool.
We do however have a list of signatures to compare past registrations to, but unfortunately the name William Stewart/Stuart Wade does not appear on this.
As you have quite rightly pointed out, there were different occupations that were also called Registrars, eg book keepers, so perhaps this was his occupation and not a registrar of births, deaths and marriages.
I am sorry I can not be of further assistance on this matter.

That's a shame, but maybe just what you were suspecting, perhaps directories might be more specific.

There is a collated list of directories which some of our members hold http://forum.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk ... =16&t=6906 so if you want to send a pm to anybody, do so. I can check the 1853 Gores this evening.
