Post by riley »

On researching births I have come across this anomoly.
Joseph Rockwood West Derby September quarter 1932 vol 8b page 969 mother's maiden name Riley.
Edward P Rockwood West Derby December quarter 1932 Vol 8b page 913 mother's maiden name Riley.
Can anyone suggest an explaination for this seeming anamoly.

Hi,
These are Rockwood nee Riley births in Liverpool from 1925 to 1940 in FreeBMD:
Births Sep 1931:
Rockwood, Joseph - Riley - W.Derby - 8b - See S/32
Rockwood , Joseph - Riley - W.Derby - 8b - see S'32

Births Sep 1932: Rockwood, Joseph - Riley - W.Derby - 8b - 969
Births Dec 1932: Rockwood, Edward P - Riley - W.Derby - 8b - 913

Births Sep 1934: Rockwood, Albert H - Riley - Liverpool - 8b - 442

Re the 1931 births: This is a duplication caused by a correction being added..... 'See S/32' instead of 'see S'32'. The latter being the original transcription into the FreeBMD database. If you look at the actual GRO Index page the entry will be a hand-written notation at the bottom of the page. Where a correction has been made to a transcription in the FreeBMD database, the corrected entry will appear first in searches, with the previous incorrect entry below it. FreeBMD will eventually perform a 'reconciliation' on the database and the incorrect entry will be removed at that stage.

The 1931 handwritten entry indicates that the birth of Joseph was not officially registered when he was born in the September qtr of that year but in the September qtr of 1932. So Joseph 1932 was actually born the previous year. Perhaps Mrs Rockwood realised, when Edward was born or was about to be, that she hadn't registered Joseph. If you ordered Joseph's birth cert the registration year would be 1932 but the birth date on the cert would be 1931. It is always advisable to check the source document when reading transcriptions.

We couldn't better the explanation given by DickieSam, but it just shows that it pays to check the original image and don't take the indexes for granted.
