Henderson family

Post by Mickyblue »

Hi, anyone able to help identify the Father of William George Henderson, born 1871, Kirkdale Liverpool. m. in1899 to Elizabeth Conning. William George's father is named on the wedding certificate as George (deceased) a mariner. William George was living in Sandon Road at the time of his wedding. I have searched without success to find his parents or siblings, any pointers would be gratefully received.

Is he the William George who is a joiner on the cenus?

Where does the knowledge he was born in Kirkby come from?

Do you have a birth certificate?

Welcome aboard Mickeyblue :)
I can only find a birth for George William Henderson around this time.
Someone in Anx has put a correction in to William George.
This birth was Jan 1870 so possibly not your lad.
In 2 census he's born Lpool.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Can you please give full details from the marriage certificate - ie which church, occupation of William and witnesses as well as the other details and also have you found them on subsequent censuses to help us see the general overall picture. Which census did you find his birthplace given as Kirkby?

Hi,
You should get the birth cert for William. The only one I can find around this time bn Liverpool was registered in 1870 not 1871.
HENDERSON, George William
Registration district: West Derby
Year/qtr of registration: 1870 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 371

If the Father's name column is blank there is no way to confirm who his father was unfortunately. He may be as named on that marriage cert, or that name may be what he was told.

Hi, thanks for reply,
Yes he is the William George who was a joiner. He married in the parish church of Walton on the Hill. Witnesses were John Henderson and Martha Rodger. Correction to where he was born- Kirkdale not Kirkby.

1901 census gives a dob of 1873 and 1911 as 1872 both state born Liverpool. Where does Kirkdale come from?

Do you have him in any earlier census?

There appears to be anothe William George the son of a John Henderson both father and son are silk mercers.

Thanks so much for looking, William George and John, Silk Mercers, are not our family of Hendersons. The only certificate I have is William George's wedding certifcate. His address at the time of his wedding is Sandon Road, Liverpool. The 1901 census confirms his address and the birth of his second child, Lillian Mona, their first child died. I have met all of the children born to William and Elizabeth and am certain the grandfather was George, but there was never any mention of his wife or when or where he was born, if only I had asked more questions!! As William's father was a mariner he could so easily have been at sea when all the census' were taken, making it much more difficult to trace him. And as i don't know the name of William's mother or the birth date/ place of his father I can't apply for a birth certificate, hence my brick wall. Any suggestions anyone?

Just thinking of looking earlier back but we still don't know where "Kirkdale" came from. If you are thinking of Sandon Road I would have thought that was more Anfield but then where he married isn't to say he was born in the area.

John Henderson was a witness to William's marriage. Can it be assumed he was his brother. I see you have checked out the Liverpool Seaman's orphanage for William, but also there was a Florence Mary Henderson there too at the same time. Also John Henderson is recorded at an Industrial School in 1881. Maybe these three children all belong together and were orphaned in the 1870's. There is a death record for a George Henderson b. 1844 died in 1872 and also one for a Mary Ellen Henderson, b. 1844 died in 1876. Moya

You beat me to it Moya!
Was just about to post I that I found a Florence Henderson in the Liverpool Seaman's Orphanage in 1881 while looking at a 'George' Henderson of the right age in the same orphanage.

Just to confirm I can't find baptisms or marriages for these children in Liverpool, however in case it's something to think about the only Florence Mary I have found on LancsBMD is
Florence Mary Catharine Henderson, born 1871 Stretford, Trafford.

There is also a William George Henderson born 1872 Chorlton-on-Medlock Manchester

There are not many with middle names that match, could these be of interest?

This birth registration may tie in with the baptism Mary has found

William George Henderson

June Q 1877 West Derby registration district
Volume 8b page 352

Might be worth trying for this birth certificate with the proviso father is to be George.

Maybe he "altered" his age at marriage!

Just another thought maybe look up the baptism first and see if the father is George a mariner.

Hi all,

I can't find the William George Henderson (parents George and Martha) in the 1881 census. However there is a death in Q4 1877 which could be him:

Deaths Dec 1877 (>99%)
Henderson William George 0 W. Derby 8b 247

Hi Alison,
My William George married in 1899, one of his daughters was my Mother-in-Law, so the death record in 1877 is certainly not him.

Many thanks for your research though.

There is the following birth entry in FreeBMD which could be the Florence Mary Henderson in the orphanage in 1881:

Births Dec 1869 (>99%)

Henderson Florence Mary A W. Derby 8b 414

Interesting that Elizabeth Conning and her sister Martha, with parents etc, were in Kirkdale in 1881.
Trivia... :)
