Widnes WW2 Casualty Research.
For the last 2 years I have been (slowly) researching the WW2 casualties associated with Widnes, and currently have compiled a Roll of Honour that contains 379 names, 21 of which where civilian casualties, but also a fair amount of service personel that are not commerated on the Widnes Cenotaph.
My research has been built up from sources such as CWGC, Newspaper Archives, War Diaries, Regimental and Divisional Histories, Aircraft and Ships loss records, Ancestry, Find my past, family members and other researchers who specialise in certain areas of the conflicts of WW2, and have todate obtained the grave photographs of nearly 320 of the 377 casualties from all around the world (including the single CWGC grave in Honduras).
But as with any research, there is always more to add, so in general I would just like to request that if any member has any information relating to a casualty of WW2 from Widnes that they contact me to see if the information is of use.
Thanks in Advance.

Can I suggest that any requests be made on one of the ordinary boards to keep this one just "For Posterity".

Gigi, I dont have a great deal to add to what you already know, but if you have not seen this before, it was printed in the Widnes Weekly News in 1944gigi wrote:Phil, if any of the info I have pm'd you is relevant please feel free to post it here.
Widnes Weekly News – September 1940 – Widnes Gunner Killed
Gunner Charles Luckavitch of 18 Quinn Street, Widnes has been killed in action with the meditranian foces. He was 33 years of age and a son of Mrs and Mrs Luckavitch of the same address and was married with one little girl. He had served some time in the territorials and was called up on the outbreak of hostilities. He had served two years in Italy,
As reported in our last issue, Gunner Charles Luckavitch was killed in action in Italy. Aged 32 years, he was a son or Mr and Mrs Ludwig Luckavitch, 18 Quinn Street, Widnes,. He was educated at St Marie’s school, and later became a professional boxer. It was however as a footballer that he was well known in Widnes. He played for Widnes R.F.C. under the name of Charles Brown, and while stationed in England played for Swinton.
Before being called up with the territorials, which he joined in 1936, Gunner Luckavitch worked at Randle Works of I.C.I. Runcorn. He served for a while at Scarpa Flow before going to Italy in 1942. His wife before her marriage was Miss Marie Cowsill, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Cowsill, 13 Mainwaring Street, Manchester and his little daughter Noreen is two years of age.
There are four brothers on active service, Bernard Luckavitch (on H.M.S. Nelson), and martin, Anthony and Bernard ????
Mrs Luckavitch has received the following letter from an officer in her husbands battery:
“It is with deep regret that I have to inform you that your husband was killed yesterday morning September 8th, when the trench in which he was sheltering received a direct hit. Will you please accept from me, the deepest sympathy on behalf of the officers, N.C.O.’s and men of the battery. Your husband had only been with us a few days but during that short time he had shown himself to be an efficient and cheerful soldier. He had become a well liked member of his troop, and he will be missed very much by us all. I hope you will find a little comfort in these inadequate words of mine
Re: Widnes WW2 Casualty Research.
Hi. I'm very late joining this thread but I've just stumbled upon it while browsing the web.
My maternal grandfather is on the list - Eric Cank. He was a Stoker (not Stocker - this error is on a number of other sites too!). There is also a discrepancy with his age on the memorial in Plymouth which I'm yet to get to the bottom of. We still have his naval records but regrettably the telegram notice to my Gran didn't survive. By all accounts, my Gran had to receive medical attention after she got the news, which is no surprise as she was expecting my Mum at the time. It must have been devastating for her.
Unfortunately my Gran passed away some years ago and before I started my own family history research so I can't find out any further information.
It's nice to know that these men are still being remembered for the sacrifice they - and their families - made.

Re: Widnes WW2 Casualty Research.
With regards to the post on Charles Luckavitch. Ludwig was my Great Grandfather. The Bernard mentioned was not a brother but the son of Joseph. Bernard was my Father. It would be interesting to find out who "gigi" is as it would make them a relative of mine! Unfortunately I do not know a great deal about the family apart from my Grandfather and Father and his sister Marie. I knew Martin and Tony but only as a young lad.
