Hello
I don't live in England and no little about the probate law.
I found an entry in the prob. calendar for 1884. There is no will. The deceased died in England and his father was next of kin in South Africa. The father asked another relative in Liverpool to act for him in probate.
A grant was made - but my query is what sort of information is one likely to find in this record? thanks
Drew
Probate register
Re: Probate register
Could you tell us the person's name so we could look at the entry?
However
If it says something like Probate Liverpool or London or a big city and names Executors that means there was a will.
If it says Administration granted or letters of administration granted to there will be no will

Re: Probate register
If it was Letters of Admon below is an example of what I found on one of mine. He actually died in 1877, so it took over nine years for the legalities to be sorted out.
On 31st December, 1886, Letters of Administration of the Personal Estate of Thomas Richardson Lunt, late of Deysbrook Lane, West Derby in the County of Lancaster, Joiner, deceased who died on the 14th day of July, 1877, at Deysbrook Lane, aforesaid intestate were granted by Her Majesty’s High Court of Justice in the District Registry attached to the Probate Division thereof at Liverpool to Margaret Ann Lunt of The Priory, St Michaels, Aigburth near Liverepool in the said County the lawyer, Widow and Relict of the said deceased, she having been first sworn duly to administer.
Sureties John Pugh Jones of 21 West Street, Prescot in the said County Cashier and Charles William Harvey of 53 Lord Street, Liverpool aforesaid Architect and Surveyors.
Effects £137.15.2 no leasehold.
Extracted by Banks and Kendall, Solicitors, Liverpool.

Re: Probate register
thank you for this.
If I order a copy do you think it will have an address for JGW in South Africa?

Re: Probate register
It may do but there again it may not. It's quite likely to just say South Africa. The letters of administration are usually a set form with names etc written in the relevant spaces.
