Marriage Records - Help Please

Post by padjo1 »

Hi All

Wondering if you can help me with the following, my question being would there be two marriage certificates.

My great grandmother re-married in 1916 following the death of her first husband in 1913.

I have found the marriage banns in 1916, record and have the marriage certificate.

As they were widow and widower I thought I would look to see if I could find the first wife for her second husband, and came across another marriage in 1920, for my great grandmother and the second husband, just by chance.

The first marriage in 1916 was at St Peters Church, Liverpool, the second St Francis Xavier, all the details match for her for the 1920 marriage. My working out from the third marriage record in 1920 if I am correct from reading the Latin in the end column, that he may have changed religion?

Again Back to my question would there be a second marriage certificate for the 1920 marriage. :?: or as they were already legally married they would not need one??, as yet I have not found a record for the 1920 marriage other than the church record.

Appreciate your thoughts

regards

I have the same thing with a sister of my Grandad. The second marriage turned up as an extra record in the RC baptism register. The second marriage being just for RC church.

I would think that they may have advised the priest that they wanted to be married in the Roman Catholic religion however I believe they would not require the Registrar to be present since they were already married, you should find only an entry in the Parish Register.

However, you should look for an adult baptism as it would seem that a conversion has taken place.

Thanks Blue and Mary for your responses.

Never thought to check for a baptism, will have a go.

Would St Francis Xavier records be held at the church as far back as date circa 1920, would would these be at the records office?

I do believe they are at the Records Office, last I heard the Register was in the process of being filmed but that was quite a while ago, so I'm fairly sure it will be available in the World Museum.

Thanks Mary

Will add it to my list of the few things I need to sort, haven't forgot the offer of some look up's while I am there. Need to arrange a day now.

Just found some nice reading on SFX, via the OPC, which brought back some happy memories of my school days as this was my school, in addition some not so happy memories over the years, it a beautiful church with so much history.

The church usually has an open day during heritage week, to my memory it is in September, I went a couple of years ago, yes it is beautiful and they also had all the celebration robes on display. A very knowledgeable parish member showed us around. Watch out for it this year, I'm sure you would enjoy visiting.
