BROWN Anthony - Effects under £450
19 July, 1875 Administration of the effects of Anthony Brown late of Regent Road Liverpool in the County of Lancaster Licensed Victualler who died 4th July, 1875 at Regent Road was granted at Liverpool to Rebecca Brown of 40 Lamb Street Commercial Road Liverpool Widow the Relict.

There! still in Kirkdale.
Colette/MaryA/Dickiesam, I don't know how you did the tracing but Anthony's wife was Rebecca Brown so I am sure you have found the Hotel/Pub, Anthony died in the Sept Q 1875 so the date ties in as well. Rebecca Bawden was born in 1830 in Flint .

We are very grateful for all the help you & other forum members have provided on this matter. I hope someone in the family can find the death cert for Anthony just to have matters on a record, if not I'll order one next week.
Is the link to the Coroners report available? I would like to send this to other members of our family who had been searching for the Hotel/Pub and given up long ago.
I also plan to to photograph the addresses as I now live on Merseyside, thanks again to everyone for all the help.

1874 Directory which was probably recorded in 1873 has lots of pubs, on every corner, names not listed, in Regent Rd just the names of the lic. victualler. No Anthony Brown or his wife.
There is an Anthony Brown engineer 49 Freeland St Kirkdale.
He was listed as an Engine fitter at works in 1871 Pluto St.

Great going everyone, particularly finding the Coroner's Report Colette, which I'm suspecting came from the newspapers.

The inquest report was in a newspaper unfortunately no inquest records have survived for 1875. Here is the article and the probate information right click on the images to save them:-

Thanks for this photo I'm sure this is the correct Regent Hotel as its in Kirkdale not Bootle.
I just checked on Google Maps & I now reckon Regent Road has two series of numbering - at the north end its in Bootle , L20 8DB post code today and at the Kirkdale, Liverpool end where this photo was taken its currently L5 9SY next door to the D M R Engineering Firm - both pubs are on what I know as the Dock Road. The windows & facade of the pub are identical to those on the DMR building.

I'll drive down next week and call in at both buildings to take photo's of the outside/inside if possible.

Hiya

funny realy as i have been in there in the 80s when it was Bonkers..love it when you get a bit of history on a place.

My brother and his mates had to place a coin between their buttocks and drop it into a beer glass..wonder if they did things like that back then haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Perhaps the family tried to change the name of the pub. Coming from Wigtownshire, which is part of Galloway and historically was known as West Galloway. Trying to make themselves more at home.

Yes thats exactly the reason for the change of name,
Here's the photos I took over the weekend

Bootle end of the (Dock Road) Regent Road-
Image

then I drove down to Kirkdale end and took what was the Regent Pub now part of DMR Engineering - quite possibly the Gallaway Arms of 1875
Image

The rear of this building looks original, I hope to take more photos once I have established the facts.

Later this week going to the Liverpool Records Office to search the licence records for Anthony Brown / 60 Regent Road

Spent a successful day at the Records Office/Museum - see photos from the Gores Directory 1874 + 1875

Anthony Brown ran the pub in 60 Regent Road Kirkdale from 1874 to July 1875
6th March 1874 he was fined 20s + costs for serving on a Sunday morning
Image

1875 he changed the Regent Hotel name to Galloway Hotel
Following his death on 4th July the Licence was transfered to a Margaret McQilliam on 29th July

Image

Thanks again for all help & advice from the forum on this long standing family story - it was true after all.

Sometimes there's just no other way forward than the personal trawl at the Record Office, glad it produced such good results.
