Probate Index on Ancestry

Post by Hilary »

I think I am going bonkers.

A few weeks ago I am sure I found an entry on the index for Mary Ann Blacklock who died in December Q 1899 in Southport. The address was Seaview Southport. A nephew Joseph Hinmers was one of her executors.

Can I find this again? No! In fact I cannot find any entries in 1899 or 1900 at all. I've even tried just Smith 1899 or Smith 1900 and absolutely nothing.

Please can anyone find the missing entry for me?

Many thanks
Hilary

Hi Hilary

Don't think you are going bonkers as I couldn't see anything either, nobody by that name :(

Can I just ask why you searched for Smith?

I put in Smith year of probate 1900 +- 1 year thinking there was sure to be a Smith will for those years but nothing.

I also looked for my great great grandmother Mary Alice Ambrose died 1900 for whom I have a copy of her will and she doesn't show either.

I'm now wondering if I saw the entry in the Index held at Lancashire Record Office and that Ancestry has missed out a few years in their filming.

I have a feeling that I have read somewhere that pages were missed in the scanning of those volumes or possibly whole years missed.

I understand why you use the name Smith, something I often do myself as it's the most common, however in this instance you can just put in the year and check "Exact only" and for 1899 only one appears - a mistake!!! the probate year is actually 1890 however it does state the year of death to be 1899.

Entering 1900 and Exact doesn't show any.

Seems to be a failing on Ancestry's behalf, you must have found the entry when checking originally in Preston, or maybe Liverpool.
