Galloway Arms Hotel in South Liverpool 1875 - Updated

Post by Olduser1 »

Hoping for a lead on my relatives brief ownership of a Hotel/Pub called the Galloway Arms somewhere in South Liverpool 1875.
The Father was Anthony Brown b1813 in Sorbie, Wigtownshire originally a Blacksmith who took his family down to Liverpool for work in the 1860's
I have the Census records for 1861 & 1871 when they lived at Pluto St, Kirkdale.
In 1875 Anthony suffered a heart attack and died and the family had to leave the Galloway Arms as the women were not permitted to own the hotel.
Any ideas ?

Hi,
Do you have documentary evidence linking Anthony and the Brown family with the Galloway Arms, either as owners or tenant landlord? If he was either, in order to operate, Anthony would have needed a licence. [See following post from Daggers].

Where did the information that women were not permitted to own the hotel come from, family lore or documentary evidence? It is possible the licencing authority http://liverpool.gov.uk/Business/licenc ... -licences/ has records that are now with the Liverpool Records Office.

A minor correction to the previous post. Until quite recently liquor licences were issued by the magistrates, not the local authority. There are some records in the LRO but I do not have details.
Don't forget that much of what is now south Liverpool was not part of the borough/city until late 19th/early 20th century.

The information re running the hotel was in an old letter from one of his grandchildren.
I'll give the Liverpool records office a try

Thanks

Hi Daggers,
Thanks for the correction. I have amended the post. Do I remember from somewhere a Galway Arms pub near Anfield footy ground? Sure I have seen a reference somewhere.

I would suggest you purchase Anthony Brown's death certificate if you have not already got it as this will give his address and place of death. This should then help as to where the pub was.

I've just checked Kelly's 1881 Directory and no sign of a pub called the Galloway Arms Hotel or a Galway.
The 1860 directory is more difficult to search as pubs weren't listed alphabetically, only listed alphabetically with publican's name.

Sorry not to be of more help.

If you haven't got the death cert, this is the only death registered in Liverpool in 1875:
Deaths Sep 1875: BROWN, Anthony - 62 - Liverpool - 8b - 4.

As Hilary says, the cert will give you both the place of death and the home address of the deceased.

Nothing showing up in the Slaters for 1869 either for Galloway as a pub or Anthony Brown.

Where have you got the clue that the pub was in South Liverpool? it seems unusual to me that they move from Kirkdale to the South end.

I'm checking if the death cert for Anthony Brown is somewhere in the family before I order another copy.
And yes the description of the hotel comes from the same letter written years ago by one of his grand daughters writing of times gone by and how they came to move from Scotland to the busy port of Liverpool for work.
The Browns only owned the Hotel for approx 12 months when he died of a heart attack.

Just checking here first to see if someone on the forum knew of a way around the records of old hotels pubs.

I appreciate the suggestions and comments received today.

It would be worth checking if Anthony left a will. If he owned the hotel it would probably be in the probate letters of administration concerning such a substantial asset.

Galloway Street is in the top right corner off the junction of Spofforth Road [off Wavertree Road, top right end] and Webster Street. http://www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co. ... z/rt46.htm

Hi

Looking at my old Edwardian Maps there doesn't seem to have been a public House at either end of Galloway Street back then..

There's a strong possibility the pub cum hotel was in Regent Road. Just done a stroll down the road via the 1871 census...

# 23 is a pub, possibly Lloyds; # 25 is the Nelson; #s 26, 27, 33-34, and 37 all appear to be pubs occupied by licenced victuallers [I suppose they could be grocers' off-licences, etc?].

Then moving past Regent Road Flats, devoid of licenced premises, we come #57 a pub, #s 60 and 65 appear to be licenced premises. Then # 68 is an un-named 'Hotel. And # 69 is another licenced premises. Then we come to #79 the Washington Hotel and # 75 the Royal Arms.

At the Kirkdale end there's #s 93/94 and # 170.

In 1881 the only one I could spot was the Dublin Arms at #7. In fact there is only 1 entry.

The only "hotel" without a name in 1871 was at #68, so that could be a candidate for the Galloway/Galway premises.

EDIT TO ADD: Initially unable to find the rest of Regent Road in 1881 I have just discovered it was indexed under Regent Rd! Too late to do a stroll through now.

Hi

Its a pity there was no number Regent Road..looked at 1881 directory and 40 Commercial Road on the corner of Arlington Street and was a Greengrocers then run by Henry Aindow, then there was another block of shops etc and then Lamb Street..sadly Lamb Street isnt in the directory..

Pubs were and are often known to their users by a name different from the official one. Also many in Victorian times had no official name, which all helps to muddy the issue, but you have all been fitting this jigsaw puzzle together well!
