John Watkin(s), d 1811 Prescot

Post by Frances »

I'm looking for the birth or marriage of John Watkin(s), Fishermonger, bur 12 Sept 1811 Prescot. He married Mary and had 7 children: John 1801, Francis 1803, Mary 1805, Mary 1807, George 1809, William 1811 and John May 1812 (8 months after he died. That's all I know. Would love to find more on him and how/why he died. Have been searching for many years, but never been able to get to the registers. Now they are on the internet, I still can't find him. Any help or connections welcome.

(I have the baptism certificate of the youngest (John 1812) stating parents names and occupation)

Generally causes of death only started appearing after civil registration when a death had to be regsitered from 1837. Before that some vicars did put causes in their death registers but not all did.

I have a copy of St Mary's Prescot registers 1766 - 1795 and there is no baptism for a John Watkins listed

No marriage at the church is listed for him on the http://www.lan-opc.org.uk

It's very possible he camefrom elsewhere to Prescot. Does Mary show on a census?

According to the Lancashire Wills database John Watkin left a will

Supra Watkins John of Prescot, fishmonger. 28 Oct 1811

The will will be at Lancashire Record Office. If you cannot get there to see it they will be able to tell you the cost of a copy and postage to send it to to you. The will may give very helpful information in your search for information ont he family. He may have made a will because he was ill.

That's brilliant! Thank you, no I can't get there, I'm in Somerset, but will get in touch. I confess I haven't searched for Mary on the census and the link seems to be down this morning on Ancestry - site unavailable. I have their son John, the youngest, my ancestor living Toll Barrs, Nr Market Place, Prescot in 1841.

Thanks, Mary. That could well be him, there's nothing at all likely coming up on Ancestry.

I did find a Mary Watkins bp 1777 at St Peter's Liverpool, dau of John Watkins, Mariner. Lived St Thomas's Street. Thinking he might be a likely parent for a fishmonger..
