Hi All
Just reading through some more excellent posts here.
Katie
If a child was worn in a Workhouse, as was my Grandfather and his sister, back on 3rd May 1904 ( Grandad) and 10th July 1913, (Sister), grandad at Smithdown Road Workhouse, and his sister at Walton Workhouse, would there be admission and discharge records, for my great grandmother, appreciate 100 year rule for the sister ( another 17 months for her records.)
If there was would they be at the library or the satalite office at Sandhills?
regards
Michelle
Another Workhouse Query
Re: Workhouse Records
This is not an answer as to whether there would be Workhouse records available for your query Michelle, but I am wondering where you have the information from about where they were born? I'm suspecting that you may have their birth certificates which give the address - ie Rice Lane for the Walton one.
It could well be that the births didn't really take place in the Workhouse, but in the infirmary part. Don't know if this makes you feel any better about the births.

Re: Workhouse Records
Hi Mary
Thanks for you reply, yes I have the birth certificates, and example grandads shows
Date of birth 03/05/1904, Toxteth Park Workhouse, Liverpool, and the informant is the Master of the Workhouse, Smithdown Road, Liverpool. It shows his mother Amy as a domestic servant ( of 45 Cockburn Street), no trace of her anywhere apart from the 1911 census with Grandad, and his sister, in Birkenhead
Not an issue regarding the workhouse births, times hard in those days and from what I have been advised by mum and aunties, grandad knew he was born at the Workhouse, a taboo subject never spoken of. Would just like to find information on Amy, she sure is a mysterious lady, more than two years on and no nearer to solving the mystery
regards

Re: Another Workhouse Query
If you would like us to help with any thoughts we might have, can you give their full names, and Amy's surname and age given in the 1911 census.

Re: Another Workhouse Query
Hi Mary and hi all
Thanks again for your response. I have already posted an article a short while ago, under Thomas William Patterson, mother Amy, however in short here is what I have so far.
Amy Patterson, born circa 1876 -1879 per 1911 census record, and death certificate ( born 1879 per 1911 census and 1876 per death certificate).
I know Grandad Thomas William Patterson was born per birth certificate 03/05/1904 at Liverpool Toxteth Park Work house, birth certificate states Amy, domestic servant of 45 Cockburn Street.
Grandad's sister Vera Patterson was born at 3 Davies Street, Birkenhead and lived at 7 Davies Street, Birkenhead, birth on 18/12/1908
Then Elsie Patterson, born 10/07/1913 at 107 Rice Lane, Liverpool, mother Amy servant of 4 Ashley Street, West Derby, registered by E A Gotts, occupier 107 Rice lane.
In 1911 Amy Patterson, is on 1911 census living with Grandad and Vera a 23 Willy/Willey Street Birkenhead, as a widow, and her death certificate 17/11/1922 was registered by occupier 107 Rice Lane, she had an address "of 12 Mansfield Street", formerly servant and Spinster.(This most likely at the infirmary as there is a certified cause of death).
All the information matches to births etc, on 1911 census except she has grandad born at 45 Cockburn Street, covering born in workhouse?? She states she was born in Camden Street, there was a Camden Street, off Davies Street in Birkenhead, and the Mansfield Street, address was the address Grandad married from in December 1931 to Grandma.
Phew that took more space than I thought.
Any ideas, thoughts etc on how I can try and find Amy before 1911 would be much appreciated, none of the childrens birth certificates show a father, however there is a baptism record for Vera, at Davies Street, showing father Thomas??
regards
Michelle

Re: Another Workhouse Query
Walton Workhouse admission and discharge registers are few. There are a couple of registers which someone rescued from a skip (scandalous) they cover 1913 to 1915 ish. I did do a post sometime back with regards to Walton. Smithdown Road records not too bad but again not as complete at Brownlow Hill. if you go to http://www.liverpool.gov.uk and click on Libaries and Archives and click on Archives catalogue and type in Walton/Smithdown Road you should be able to see what is available.

Re: Another Workhouse Query
Don't get me started. Same thing happened with Prescot Workhouse Infimary tossed in a skip. And Smithdown Road some volumes of birth registers tossed in a skip. These were rescued and ended up in what was Quiggins in School Lane. I alerted the Record Office about them and these people at Quiggins wanted paying for them. Anyway these registers were rescued and they are now in the Archives but they are closed. Unbelievable how our heritage is treated with total disrespect.

Re: Another Workhouse Query
Hi Katie
Unbelievable, why are Smithdown closed, is it because they are under 100 year rule??
What a cheek Quiggans wanted paying for them, these records when available belong to Library for public viewing at the given time, not for the gain of others.

Michelle
