We'll there will be a picture of her when she was admitted and when she was discharged. Why she was admitted etc etc. Be aware that there is a 100 year closure on these records, so if the records you wan't to access fall in that period you may have to pay the research officer so check.

Rainhill records
Hi,
It is quite some time ago, but I was able to get copies of a g.g.father's records from when he was admitted to 'Rainhill County Lunatic Asylum' to when he died there in 1877. I received his admission and ward medical records and a copy of the autopsy.
I originally applied by email to the LRO and was directed to obtain a 'Permission Letter' from, I think Alder Hey. It took some to-ing and fro-ing of correspondence but eventually the permission was granted.
Racking the grey cells to remember the lady in Alder Hey I wrote to! It was over 10 years ago. I know that to access medical records I had to prove my line back to my man with copies of birth and marriages certs, from his marriage, the birth of my paternal g.mother, her marriage, the birth of my father and his marriage, right down to my birth cert.
Having got the 'permission' letter I then wrote to the LRO explaining I could not attend in person. The nice people there said 'no problem', and emailed me digital photographs of the relevant papers. Great service!

Yes they are at Sandhills. Go on to the online catalogue www.liverpool.gov.uk and go to the Archives and type in Rainhill you should be able to see if the record you wan't to consult is not within the 100 year closure. The Ref no is M614 RAI

Hi Katie,Katie wrote:You don't have to go through all that now DS. The research officer came and gave a talk last year on Accessing closed records and MaryA posted details and you dont have to do that now for Rainhill, I'm sure MaryA will pick up on this and get the link.
Glad to hear the 'system' has lightened up. I assume this applies to Medical Records as well as admissions and discharges? The rigmarole I had to go through was because I wanted medical records, primarily to lay a cupboard skeleton to rest and clear up a family story.

Workhouse Records
Hi All
Really interested in the post on records for Workhouses.
My Great grandmother passed away according to her death cert, in Walton Workhouse, she is a complete mystery apart from the 1911 census she appears on with Grandad an one of his younger sisters, ( No maiden name etc) and 1911 census states widow, and death cert spinster. Her death cert in 1922 states of the address my grand parents got married from 9 years later. So would be interested in who or how , especially any photo's , on admission etc. Do appreciate records are not complete.
Do you have to attend Liverpool Library to access the records, for workhouses, or can they be done online if library member.
I have very little time to get the library with work commitments.
Appreciate any replies.
Regards
Michelle

It would be brilliant if documents were accessible online, but unfortunately this facility hasn't been set up by the Liverpool Record Office.

Update On Rainhill
Hi all
Recieved this mail today
From Roger Hull,
Researcher,
Liverpool Record Office
I have found an Elizabeth Cook in the indexes to Rainhill asylum. She was admitted on 3/6/1892 (no 9254) and was admitted to the Annexe (usually for cases of dementia). She died in November 1923?.
We should have admission papers and a casebook file which you can either see in person or we can digitise this for you for a fee of £25. I can then either send the images to you by e-mail or on disc or as hard copy.
If you want to view the files in person we do need advance notice of your visit to our temporary premises near Sandhills station. See our website for fur the r detail at www.liverpool.gov.uk and follow the links.
So good news...I have asked Roger Hull if he would be so good as to make sure she is my woman before i pay £25 just by checking her address on admission..
I made an error i thought i found Elizabeth's burial in St Helens Oct-Dec 1922 so sent for death cert
Now i hear its 1923 close but no cigar,,that £10 could hav egone towards the files.....
xx

Would have saved you the £25 if you had visited Sandhills to see the documents Col. The train would have taken you very close by. I bet you would be allowed your camera too, to take photographs of the docs for free.

It is almost certain that your g.g.mother passed away in the infirmary attached to the hospital, not in the workhouse itself. The cause of death and whether there was an autopsy will be noted on the death cert. Occasionally the reason for the hospital admission can be deduced from the cause of death column entry. If there are records they will not be open to the public for another 10 years.
As we like mysteries on this forum [why is she a spinster on the death cert if she was a g.g.mother?] why not post a new topic?

Cottage Home
Now i am wondering about Elizabeth's children..
As my Great Gran Jane Cook told mum she was in the Cottage Homes..this must be true..and i bet its when her mother went into Rainhill.
So i have a date to work from which is good..she also said she worked in the Isle Of Man..but we dont know when..
If Jane 9 in 1891 and shes in Liverpool in 1901 would it be possible that the Cottage Home would send girls to the Isle Of Man as servants in their early teens ??
I have never been able to find Jane in 1891 nor her father Archibald or brother also called Archibald..only Elizabeth and her youngest son William..living alone in Kirkdale..

Now's your chance to learn Colette - you may find the answers to many mysteries if you found that entry, or rather exit from the Cottage Homes since they often give reasons and where they were discharged to.
You would find everybody very helpful, whether you were searching in the Records Office (Museum) or Sandhills, you'd soon find your way around or if in any difficult there won't be a shortage of helpers to advise.

Definitely take the plunge and go! Yours is such a specific query that they will have it all out waiting for you. You will have to make an appointmnet for Sandhills and then when you arrive they will have the stuff waiting for you.
I think the Cottage homes registers may also be there as well so you could request to see them at the same time.
It's great seeing the records for yourself. I still remember the awe and amazement I felt when I held a will made and signed by my 5x great grandfather in 1814.
