I thought you kind folks would be interested in a little mystery I have just solved since I am surrounded by 6 inches of snow
My GGuncle Elijah Bartlett married Emma Spillett in 1859 in Canterbury - Emma disappeared off the radar and Louisa took her place (Elijah married her in 1876) Sadly she died in 1880 - but still no death for Emma. Now surprise he married Emma Spillett in 1882 Did he marry two ladies of the same name and same DOB NO it has now come to light that he divorced Emma in 1874 siting one Jesse Campin who were living on the Isle of White with three daughters in the 1881 cencus. This is the interesting part. Emma married Elijah in 1882 - yes and they had a daughter called Mercy in 1883 BUT on the 1891 cencus Emma is back with Jesse and the girls and Elijah is living as a widow with Mercy
Sorry folks that where the gossip ends Elijah died in 1913 still living with Mercy who is now married and Emma is still with Jesse in 1911.
This all came to light because I couldn't understand where Mercy came from so of course I had to get the birth certificate.
Sorry if I have bored you all and I think I had better go and clear the drive of snow so I can get some much needed food supplies.

The Sun would have made a good few inches out of that.

Speaking of inches.. did you manage to clear the snow enough to get the bread, milk and teabags? We stocked our freezer in early December expecting a repeat of last year when we actually had only about 6 inches of snow but after a very minor thaw the slush froze and we were iced in for over two weeks, twice! And we live on a hill on a very minor road!

This winter? Not a flake of snow so far. Just very cold with severe frosts.

Oh I love a good tale of goings on, it's what makes everything about our research so interesting, thanks for letting us share it.

Snow? what's snow? freezing fog though the last couple of days and I believe there were lots of slips on Saturday when people weren't expecting the damp floor to have frozen and become slippery.

It was certainly a marathon - I only found it because I was working on Elijah's brother who (believe it or not) was divorced by his wife for cruelty and adultery. What has amazed me is that these people were not rich or famous just ordinary folk

Yes the SE is under snow and it is possible we will have more tomorrow.
Dickiesam I live about 1 mile out of town and of course they only clear the major roads round here ie M11 and A12. Like you its down hill to town and up hill home but today it wasn't too bad and I wanted to make sure I had sufficient supplies to last me into next week in case.

Lets hope you all stay snow free and it starts to warm up.

Hiya Yappie.....

Well Done to you!.....wish i could find some juicy goings on in my tree.....mine so far, is quite boring...although my grandmother was disowned by her father for marrying a commoner he wasn't my grandfather - although she married my grandfather a few weeks after her husband died

Saying that, i still have many brickwalls to demolish yet !

That bit of research took about 4 years to finally crack so don't give up the brick wall crumbles at unexpected times. One find had be crying with laughter.
My 4 times gt grandfather died in 1838 aged 87 years and I found his will in which he he left very specific details on how his children should inherit. He added a codicil which read "I leave my wife £350 to be paid to her at 5 shillings per week but if she should marry or take up with another man she will have to give up the money to my son". His wife died 2 years later in 1840 aged 85 O to have a time machine to travel back

You have to wonder what the kiddies made of all this?
Jesse Campin must have been one easy going bloke.
Maybe she re-married to get the money when Elijah popped his clogs?

Thanks Tina for taking the time. If you had to read it twice imagine how long it took me to put the pieces together. Even once I had all the pieces I kept thinking no I have something wrong. I thought I would share with the forum to perhaps give those who are hitting brick walls that it all comes to light given time.
