14 Castle Street, Liverpool

Post by Mike Paice »

Dear all,

Can anyone tell me when the current building at the above address was built? One of my ancestors used to run his business from that address between at least 1821 and 1832. The current building is clearly quite old but I'm not sure if it is indeed old enough to have been there in the 1820/30s. Another problem of course is that street renumbering may mean that the current number 14 has not always been number 14 :?

Any help will be gratefully received.

Cheers.

Mike.

I would suspect that IF the building is that old, then the numbering could well be accurate since at the end of Castle Street is what is now the Town Hall and numbering would have begun there and ascended - unless somebody shouts me down and points out my error, as they often do

I notice Mason Owen, Property Consultants did a refurbishment of the building, presumably in the not too distant past, and any property management company worth their salt would surely have investigated deeds, age etc. as it it a Grade II listed building, perhaps you would get a definitive answer if you made contact with them http://www.masonowen.com/home/building- ... treet.aspx

Thank you Mary and Jacky - this is really helpful. I have already emailed Mason Owen and will report back if I hear from them. The little history does teasingly make me wonder if Humphrey Hime moved from number 14 in 1805 because it was to be redeveloped - but that is probably just wishful thinking (maybe I should study architecture so that I will be able to tell 18th from 19th century or even early 20th century architecture :D ).

Cheers.

If the biography details in the link given by Jacky above are accurate, then it would seem that Humphrey left Castle Street in 1805 and would have been in Church Street at the time you are looking at.

Liverpool Mercury etc (Liverpool, England), Friday, August 4, 1820
On Tuesday last, at St Nicholas Church, Mr C Schwind to Hester, youngest daughter of Mr Hime, Church Street.

Don't know if this person is the same family
Liverpool Mercury etc (Liverpool, England), Friday, June 6, 1834
On Thursday, 29th ult. at St Phillip's Church, Mr Henry Hime, Solicitor, to Jane youngest daughter of the late Wm. Baldwin Esq. both of this town.

Again without knowing the names of the family, this might have no connection
Liverpool Mercury etc (Liverpool, England), Friday, March 27, 1835
Death On Thursday 19th Instant, suddenly Mr Maurice Hime, aged 42.

There could well be lots more but it would mean sifting through 500+ entries. You may well be able to access the online old newspapers site via your local library subscription.

Nice find Jacky, so it would seem that by 1811 he had both premises.

My interest in 14 Castle Street is down to my good friend John Moncas as his workshop was there for many years. So my interest really is in the building itself.

I'm in the process of writing a book about one chapter in his life and when I come up to Liverpool later in the year I want to take some photos to illustrate it - on the list are the old Socialist Hall, the Lyceum, William Westwick's Temperance Hotel, St Nicholas' church and (if the current building is of the right vintage) 14 Castle Street.

Finding out more about the address and the people who occupied it might help me to establish the age and history of the current building and whether number 14 has always been on the same site.

So, thanks for all of you for your help and advice - it is really appreciated.

Mike.

Hello,

Here is 14 Castle Street on Google maps:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=14+cast ... a=N&tab=wl

Origin Spa is 16 Castle Street
Carphone Warehouse is 12 Castle Street
So 14 Castle Street is the door between them.

Big sign above advertising ground floor office space at 14 Castle Street, so presume the offices but be at the back of the building
