Brewers Arms, Rainford

Am I right in thinking there was a pub named the Brewers Arms in Rainford? I'm sure I have seen some reference to it.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

Looking for around 1890-1900. Looking for a friends relatives, but he didn't mention a name and I can't get hold of him at the minute. Will get it and post.

Hi,
The Brewers Arms pub in Rainford is mentioned in this National Archive document..

Page down the list of Street Names until you get to Public Houses. You will get the 1851 Census Reference HO107 - Piece: 2195 - Folio: 792. If you 'dial' this in a search without the Page # [which will turn out to be 26] the first name on the list is that of James Files, publican aged 45 and his wife Hannah and children, located at the Brewer's Arms.

With a little luck you should be able to track forward to the 1901 census.

I think I have narrowed it down to somewhere around Pasture Lane/School Brow( Files and Penketh). I know Pasture Lane but can't find School Brow. Anyone have a map for the period 1870-1900 ish that will show where School Brow was?

I have the 1st edition 6 inch to the mile OS map of the late 1840s of Rainford no Brewer's Arms marked. The next map would be the late 1880s early 1890s 25 inch to the mile map. I expect Rainford Library has a copy of this map. I would also think they might know or in their local history section you can find out where and how long the Brewer's Arms was in exisitence.

Or St Helens library may have the map and Lancashire Record Office.

Spent a bit of time in St.Helens library and, while looking for some pictures of WW1 casualties, the good people found a couple of maps that showed School Brow which ran from the end of Pasture Lane, by the brook, to Rookery Lane junction. On the 1847 map there was a Brewery around where the Star Inn is now, no mention of Brewers Arms but I am assuming it was part of the Brewery set up and may well have been a fore runner of the Star Inn? All in all a good couple of hours, some photos and maps

Anyone with any other info please let me know.

I have the census records on cd's so I looked up 1901 for Pasture Lane

RG13 3528 folio 67 page 13

Two pubs listed on same page

Mill House Inn

Charles Burns Head Married age 37 publican bn Knowsley

Starr Inn

Mary Lydiate head Widow age 63 publican bn Rainford.

I have only listed the head's of the households they were with other family.

I will see if I can find it in 1891.

The Star Inn is still there, I saw it on google maps street view, looks like a very old pub, Pasture Lane runs into Church Road and the pub is in Church Road.

Yes the Star is still there and is a nice pub with many of the old features. I play cricket for Rainford so pass it (frequent it

) often.
I have located the sites of the Mill House and I think Muncaster Arms also, as I have a group of medals to man who lived at the Muncaster Arms with his publican parents, who then took the Mill House over, as indicated on his record of being killed ( CWGC).
School Brow is now part of Church Road so doesn't exist in name which is a shame.
