This is the link to the post of what Electoral rolls are available. The rolls from 1900 to 1914 are at a separate site than those on microfilm. If anyone has any directories they may be able to assist.

Hi Steve,
Can you post the census information you already have? Family names, ages, etc, from which censuses?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

As Dickiesam has said the more information we have the better we may be able to help. Please give full names, occupations and dates, and when you think they may have arrived in Liverpool and how long you think they stayed.

Trade and Street directories may be able to help, some of our crew have their own copies.

ELECTORAL ROLLS 1900's

Post by steveboler »

Hi there Folks,
This is going be a long message.
My grandfather HYMAN MENDLE(Mendel) b.1879 Russia and married
GERTRUDE (Gerty) GOLDSTEIN b.1895 ( London) in West Derby 16/02/1913. Hymans' address was 14 Fortescue Street West Derby and Gertrude lived at the same address.
Marriage Certificate gives Hymans' father JACOB MENDAL deceased and Gertrudes' father DAVID GOLDSTEIN deceased. Both born in Russia. The wife of David was called LEAH GOLDSTEIN b.1874 Russia.
There is 1901 Census David Goldstein b. 1876 cousin to the Crystal family at 96 Soho Street West Derby. Could be my D.G.
1901 Census gives Hyman (Boarder) 57 Lord Street, Cheetham Hill Manchester.
1911 Census Leah Goldstein Widow at 16 Fortescue Street West Derby, children Gertrude and Lazrus.
I do not know Hymans' mother name and possibily she died in Russia. His father may have come to the UK or died in Russia. David and Leah Goldstein came to the UK and their children were born in London. What happend to David and Leah I do not know.
Somewhere both families lived in Liverpool before or after Manchester.
I have aunties who were born in West Derby - Hyman and Gertrudes children.
Hyman, David and Leah came from Russia and most likely docked at Liverpool. Jacob Mendel is a mystery if he ever came to the UK.
Is that enough info if I have not complicated how I have written.
So when did they come over and with whom and were any of them registered in Liverpool.
Regards to you all.

Steve (at a loss!!)

Hi Steve

Have tried without success in the 1914 directory to find any of your names
Also Fortescue Street is not listed.

There were only 2 Mendels, Mass and Sam, but you haven't mentioned those names.

There was a Mrs Leah Crystal at 64 Connaught Road E.

I tried FreeBMD for deaths for Leah Goldstein in all counties.
There was a death in Dec qtr 1930 in Manchester N 8d 482 for a Leah Goldstein age 58.

Not a great deal of help, but I tried

Cheers

Some thoughts

1911 census where does it say Gertrude and Lazrus where born? Is it in the UK? If yes where?

Do you have either of the children's birth certificates if born in UK?

If yes what is given as Leah's maiden name?

If the children where born in the UK it is possible the parents where married in the UK. If you have David's name and Leah's maiden name it should be possible to find their marriage. That will give their father's names.

The couple must have been together in the 1901 census (if they were in UK then

Families escaping from the pogroms in Russia generally made their way by land across Europe and then took ferries over the North Sea to England arriving at places like Hull, London or Dover. They then made their way to centres where there were other Jewish familes often related to them. I think it is highly unlikley your families would have entered the UK via Liverpool

Last but not least what where the occupations of the people you are looking for.

MENDLE/MENDEL

Post by steveboler »

Hi Erica and Hilary, (the clever girls)
This is a reply to both your risponses:-

ERICA
No you are a great help!! Leah died in 1930- yes probally her as does not seem to be another in Lancashire. LEAH CRYSTAL now that is interesting and never thought of. David was a cousin to the Crystal family - could be her? Will do some checking on Ancestry. Cannot fina a marriage for David and Leah, but will check "Crystal".
Not a little help, but a great help!!

HILARY
Gertrude was born in St. Georges East, London
Lazrus was born in Whitechapel, London
Need to get the B.C - never thought of that one, stupid me, will give mothers' name!
I need to re-check the 1901 Census.
Interesting Port of Arrival - never thought of that one.
Hyman Mendle was a Baker
Jacob Mendel was a shoe maker
David Goldstone was a shoe maker
The last two from the marriage certificate of Hyman and Gertie.

Girls you have both been of great help, thank you.
Trouble is I am looking on my mothers' side and fathers' side at the same time and must confusing myself.

Kindest regards

Steve

I think a marriage will be much easier to find when you have the wife's maiden name.

Hi Steve,
I was watching a program a couple of months back that was tracing a family that had come to the UK from Russia. They found a lot of information from requesting the 'naturalisation papers'.

Thankyou Mary. I spent about a hundred hours or so in the Liverpool records office in 2008 and looked up for others too, but can't get there at the moment so a couple of lookups could be very handy indeed. I shall start a separate post.

Leah

Post by padjo1 »

Hi

Just reading your posts, have you found the surname ( maiden name) yet, for Leah, I found Leah Ritchkin married 1900 in Prestwich.

There are 2 David's on the page a David Goldstone and David Goldstram - both Prestwich Quarter October 1900 = Vol 8d Page 659
Could this be the record you are looking for.

I have in 1911 found a David and Leah in 1911 under the name Goldstein, in Prestwich, David's occupation, grocer, no children on census record.

Apolgies if you already have this information, worth a try

ELECTORAL ROLLS 1900's -

Post by steveboler »

Oh dear I have checked now and again, but forgot this posting.
So to all concerned I sincerely apologise for this forgetness. Especially as I have had a lot of help on the posting "Fortesque Street" and without which I would not have gone far.
So let me reply to you and tell you what has happened so far.

ERIKA (thank you) Leah d. 1930 is the wife of David Goldstein (Grocer) and I have Probate details. They are in the 1911 census without children and my Leah (widow) is in Liverpool with the two children. I made that mistake and spent hours trying to find the children.
The Liverpool 1910 death of David Goldstein should be my David and that is why he is not in the 1911 census with Leah. Am awaiting from Liverpool the death certificate to see who the informant was.
No Mendals Mass or Sam - thats another family not connected.

PEETEE (thank you) Naturalisation - Stupid me - I'll check that.

PAD OL(thank you) Discounted that Leah as children born in 1893 and 1899. David Goldstein the grocer - see Erika above.

Ok so far the son Lazarus married Leah Mazorkoff in 1918(thanks to this forum) and have found out lived at 22 Fortesque Street (Have traced all her family including Canada). There was a Lazarus Goldstein Waterproof maker in Manchester so have an address to see if Leah was there.
I have an address (1927/1930) for Hyman/Gertrude Mendle in Manchester and another address for 1940.
Have been in contact with a synagogue in Manchester for their records and still awaiting a reply.
Have someone going to check the Manchester Electoral Rolls in Manchester to see if Leah existed at the above addresses and any other info available.
Have been checking out Jewish Gen and other Jewish sites.
I can get almost all together, except where and when Leah died. The two 1911 Census - strange.
Oops! forgot "Lady" - post a short reply after this.

I hope you will all forgive and I promise as when news appears I will let you know.

Kindest Regards,

Steve

Ops forgot someone, will make a small reply after this.
