Burial Records West Derby/Liverpool
Hi All,
I would be grateful for a steer in the right direction to locate any burial records for my Great Grandfather and Great Grandmother...details as follows:
John James Burnett - Born 1845 Isle Of Man, Died December 1918 West Derby Aged 73. Retired Lighthouse Keeper then Boilermaker.
Margaret Burnett (nee Gillespie) - Born 1855 Scotland, Died June 1917 West Derby Aged 62. Born in Tarbetness Lighthouse, Scotland.
I have them on the 1911 Census living at 20 or 90(hand writing?) Marsh Lane, Bootle, Liverpool.
Appreciate any help or pointers? I would love to attend the graves if the cemetary/church is still standing.
Best Regards,
Andrew Burnett

Hi Andrew and welcome,
Just to clear up a 'query'....
According to the enumerator's summary the Burnett family are living at #20 Marsh Lane. #90 is not listed.
I am sure the burial and grave experts will be along shortly!

I've sent Jan a message she's very knowledgeable about the Bootle Cemetery and any other churches that they might have taken place in. Hope she comes online soon.

If tey were C of e they could have been buried in St Mary's Bootle. This church was bombed. There are some MIs done before many of the stones were moved. This list is at Crosby Library. Burial registers on film at Liverpool Record Office or Crosby library.
They also could be at Bootle Cemetery their records are held at
Thornton Crematorium

If they were RC they could be at Ford cemetry. alot of their records are on Ancestry or there are full alpabetical copies at Crosby and Liverpool.
Hope this helps.

Hi Everyone,
Happy New Year.
Hi Andrew,
Do you have the death certs? The addresses for both would be helpful and who the informants were.
Bootle cem is still there, but a lot of the bodies that were buried in St Mary's were transferred to Bootle cem after the bombing of St Mary in 1941.
You could try Thornton Garden of rest as suggested, they will be able to tell you if your relatives are buried there or not, the only other thing I can think of is maybe Anfield cem.
There are a few headstones still at the site of St Mary's Bootle, but is a garden now, most of the headstones are either laid flat on the ground or standing up around the perimiter wall.

Folks...
I am very happy to announce that thanks to your help and Thornton Garden I have location details for the joint grave of my Great Grand Parents at Bootle Cemetery. Thornton Garden have kindly offered to post me a map of the cemetery. I will be visiting in February/March as my employer has offices in Warrington and I should be close enough to visit after work or before.
Does anybody here know if there is a car park or cars are allowed to drive into the grounds?
Also I wondered if I will be allowed to leave a cross/wooden plaque as there is no headstone at the grave? Do I need to apply for permission?
Again thanks a million and bless you all for helping people in this way.

Hi Andrew,
That is good news that you have located the grave, you can drive in to the cemetery, so there will be no problem parking there, could you give me the plot and grave number please? I have a map of Bootle cem, I will try and post it on the forum.
I am not sure about placing anything on an unmarked grave, you may need to ask Sefton Council about that, but I have no idea.

Glad to hear you've found the grave.
I don't know about parking. You would need to check with Thornton and also ask when the gates are closed. I know the cemetery gates hear in Southport (also Sefton MBC) are closed depending on the time of dusk.
Again you need to ask Thornton about leaving a permanent memorial on the grave. I know when involved in a similar situation we needed the graveholder's permission which was difficult as it was a charity now extinct. In the end we could repair the existing memorial but not add anything to it. So the best way would be to ask first.

Here is a map of the cem, don't look for the little chapel in the middle, that has now been demolished, and benches put in it's place, and a memorial stone!

Hope that helps
