I'm at a loss here. I've hired both Scottish and English researchers to scour through Census reports and what not... and they come up blank.
Somewhere I remember seeing a record that MAY pertain to my 2nd Great Grandfather James Pennington. It was from the Liverpool area.
James was born 12 Aug 1832. His obit states this took place near Glasgow, Scotland, but I don't think this is correct, unless his birth was registered elsewhere.
His father William Pennington died when James was an infant.
His mother Ann "Wallace" died when James was around 12.
It is assumed that James (family story) was placed in an orphanage until of age. Family story says that he stowed away on a boat headed for America.
James married Esther Inwood in Armada, Michigan in 1857. It is said that he came to America when 18.
Any assistance in locating his birth or parentage record would be greatly appreciated.
Some have suggested that James lied about his family history/name... because no records have been found. I don't think this is the case because...
1) James named his firstborn son William Wallace after his father and mother's maiden name.
2) James named his firstborn daughter Eva Ann after his mother (Ann).
This would be quite a fabrication to carry this story through the years.
All my research can be found at http://www.penningtonfamily.info
Thank you!!
Tracing 2nd Great Grandfather JAMES PENNINGTON
Hi and welcome to the forum.
Katie is that entry on the old method of searching and do you have a link for it please, used to be one at the bottom of a search page but they seem to have removed it.
I'm thinking that as the entry doesn't make sense - Surrey, , Hampshire, England - that it may be an entry submitted by a user, which shouldn't be taken as gospel unless checked with a parish register, however, if the entry could be viewed on one of the LDS microfilms, then it could be discovered who posted the entry and perhaps contact made.

Re:
Death: PENNINGTON, Ann
Registration District: Kingston; County: Surrey.
Year/qtr of Registration: 1843 / Apr-May-Jun
Volume No: 4; Page No: 132.
In case you haven't purchased certs here before, you can do so online at:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certi ... efault.asp
A cert will cost you £9.25 including postage even, I believe, if you live outside the UK. Would take about 2 weeks for you.

Bearing in mind the birth that Katie found in Surrey, I found this death. It is the only Ann Pennington [incl variations] between 1837 and 1845. But you would need to see the death cert to find out if she was William's widow. His mother Ann "Wallace" died when James was around 12.

The old site. Why can't they leave things as they are. The entry was posted by a LDS member after 1991 here is the link.

I thought it was weird Surrey/Hampshire. Hampshire is Southampton. I think he needs to get in touch with the LDS and see if he can glean more information from them.
I also did a search to see if there was a marriage in England and Scotland and other children for this couple no luck.

Hi everyone. I appreciate your help in assisting me to locate my 2nd Great Grandfather James. Katie, I had seen that "Surrey" record before but it is inaccurate. Not certain who posted.
Thank you dickiesam for posting the link for ordering death certificates. I am ordering this record. Will post an update once I receive.
You all are wonderful!
I am anxiously hoping to circumvent this BRICK WALL in my maternal genealogy.
