Oh good, then we'll be able to remind you about that marriage cert - I'll be very curious to know the details.

Back from my Dubai jaunt (boo hoo!) and have received the marriage cert for Frederick George Ody and Elizabeth Bell:
13th December 1911 at the register office, Fulham
Frederick George Ody 39 years, WIDOWER, Fishmongers assistant, 78 Willow Vale, Shepherd's Bush. Father Stephen Ody, Greengrocer.
Elizabeth Bell 39 years, Spinster, 78 Willow Vale, Shepherd's Bush. Father Peter Bell (deceased) Sailor.
His mark and she signed. Witnesses A.G.Tiley and P.M.Durrant.

So Minnie Stone was Frederick's first wife! Marriage 1890.
Still haven't solved my original puzzle.....where was Violet B.H. Ody and her mother Elizabeth Ody (Bell) on the 1911 census? Have seached for Willow Vale on said census to no avail?

and.....had a mooch for Walter Ody (possibly 1st born son) of Frederick and Elizabeth. Well, a certain collection of military records are FULL of info including a letter from Elizabeth wanting to "claim" her son back as he was under age when he enlisted. His birth reg is included as proof! Also ....when he was old enough to go to war he had to be signed up from Wormwood Scrubs! He was in hospital aged 19 years with syphilis and scabies. Hell of a list of charges too. What a naughty boy!

Went back to check on that name again.....maybe because it's a different site ( ) I've only got a household in Romford with four females. Can't get a hit on that address either. It could well be Elizabeth and Violet but I'm stumped as to how I find out for defo!

Hello,

I think I have a lead on Minnie Ody, Frederick's first wife.

There is a divorce entry for 1895 in the National Archives site:

Item reference J 77/564/17230
Divorce Court File: 17230. Appellant: George Ody. Respondent: Minnie Maria Ody. Co-respondent: Frank Anderson. Type: Husband's petition for divorce [hd].

The only Ody I can find on FreeBMD who married a Minnie is Frederick George.

There is also an entry on FreeBMD for the marriage in Q1 1903 for Minnie Maria Stone to Frank Anderson.

Well......that's looking good as I couldn't find a death for Minnie Ody. On Elizabeth's son, Walter's, military records his father is George Frederick Ody and we know folk fiddled about with names! Shall have a look at this tomorrow as I'm dropping! Brings to light the question: Why did Frederick George state he was " widowed" on his marriage to Elizabeth in 1911. Though we've seen stranger! Cheers Alison!

if they were marrying in a catholic church he could not have married her if he stated divorced as the cath church did not recognize divorces at that time.

Hi Susan,
Frederick and Elizabeth married in Fulham register office. Do you think he said "widowed" rather than "divorced"? Not that it would matter in a registry office? I was fuddled not being able to find a death for first wife, Minnie. Now we know they divorced around 1895. Have requested details from National Archives. (Thanks to Alison for that pointer!) That may take 10 days so will sit tight and hope there's a few more details there! Can't imagine Frederick married again between 1895 and 1911 as he was living with Elizabeth in 1901. Though there IS another Frederick George Ody in Wiltshire who had a wife die and he remarried!

he may have said it to please family. divorce was still very much frowned upon.

Very oddly, there is also a marriage for Frank A Russell to Violet H Steers in Kent in 1940 :?

A good find Alison. That 1953 GRO entry Violet B H Ody or Steers indicates Violet had been divorced. That double surname entry is the standard for a divorced female. I wonder did they remarry?
