William Fontay Moar+wife

Post by kwr »

I have his birth and his details in 1901 and 1911. I also have him marrying Jessie Allison Kirk in 1927. They seem to have only one child, Elizabeth, born in 1928.

I can find out very little thereafter. Tina did find Jessie in 1938 as a shopkeeper at 82, Teulon Street.

The death certificate of William's wife Jessie has a little information. She is referred to as "wife of William Fortay Moar" which makes me wonder if he is still alive though I can find no death for him before or after. The death certificate also tells me he was "Ships Rigger Steamship Owners" - which I find puzzlingly cryptic....

The daughter is the informant, named as E. Moar, living at 69 Stalmine Rd., Liverpool 9. This is also slightly odd as I have the daughter marrying Richard A. Rice in 1960 though it may have been because she IS the informant that she reverts to her maiden name. I can find no death for either of them - they may be still going in which case it would be nice to know....

The last piece of information I have on this somewhat shy family is that a W F Moar is aboard the "Memnon" . The official stamp on it is indistinct - 16. 9. 192? but I can't quite read it. I think this may be him...

What I would like (of course) is to know more. To save effort on your behalf I don't need to go back before 1911 but I'd like anything anyone else can suggest I could do.

In hope.......

Hi Ken

Have you had a look into this chap at all

William F Moar
Birth Date: abt 1895
Date of Registration:
Oct-Nov-Dec 1968
Age at Death: 73
Registration district: Solihull
Warwickshire
Volume: 9c
Page: 1022

just wondering if he moved on to Warwickshire

what year do you have for Jessie's death? I have 1955 in which case the daughter would have the name Moar if she only marries in 1960

Interestingly there is a death in Warwickshire for an Elizabeth Rice

Elizabeth Rice
Birth Date: 19 Jun 1928
Date of Registration: Jul 2004
Age at Death: 76
Registration district: Birmingham
Inferred County: Warwickshire
Register number: O21B
District and Subdistrict: 061/1O
Entry number: 97

does this birth date tie in with your Elizabeth?

Hi Ken,
I thought the year stamp on the Merchant Navy Card for William was 1928 but then I noticed on the reverse a notation of service on another ship from 01/05/1926. That ship, #131463 was the SS DRYDEN Regd Liverpool, 1912, Steam. SS DRYDEN was built in 1912 by W. Hamilton Glasgow and was sold in 1932.

A bit of history...
On 28th March 1918 the SS DRYDEN hit a German mine and was damaged in 49.28N, 02.55W, near Trinity Lightship, Liverpool Bay. Succesfully reached port. The mine was laid by UC 75.

The SS Memnon was #120934, Regd Liverpool in 1906, Steam.
Built: 1906, Register closed: 1930
SEE: http://www.clydesite.co.uk/clydebuilt/v ... p?id=19061

The record card appears to be a Discharge Card, so I am now thinking he was leaving the SS Memnon in September 1928, the year after his marriage.

I think Simone's find of a 1968 death in Warwickshire is very promising as his age matches his birth year of 1895. The cert will hopefully tell you what he was doing pre-retirement.

I also found a Moar nee Kirk birth in 1941, initial E [perhaps your informant on Jessie's death?].
Name: MOAR, Enid F
Registration District: Liverpool North, Lancashire.
Year/qtr of Registration: 1941 / Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's maiden name: Kirk
Volume No: 8B; Page No: 824.

And this marriage reinforces the Warwickshire death for William...
Marriage: MOAR, Enid F and SAMPSON, Collan R.
Registration District: Birmingham, Warwickshire.
Year/qtr of Registration: 1963 / Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume No: 9C; Page No: 753.

There are two probable births to the above marriage but would have to be PM'd because they are probably still living.

Just switched on to find riches....!

First of all Simone - thank you.

You don't have my obviously blinkered way of looking at things ie it all has to happen in Liverpool. There's not much doubt that you gottem. I shall send for the death certificate to make absolutely sure and let this clever group of researchers know the result when it comes.

Dickiesam - on the money again. I simply don't know what all the abbreviations mean on the cards so thank you for the exposition AND for the little extras - birth and marriage details later.

I started looking at the Moar/Allison/Kirk connections again only recently, in some desperation having come to a brick wall. I know that etiquette forbids discussion of the living but it is heartening to think that I can still hope...

I've said it before but I mean it still - this is a group of clever people with brains! So thank you all.

A happy Ken.

If you are thinking of tracking the living it can be done off open forum via PM.

Dickiesam,

That would be very useful but I've not tried to do it so don't really know what is acceptable and don't want to tread on toes.

I know Dickiesam has found some entries, he just won't post information that relates to living people as we respect their privacy.

He will be in contact with you privately and from his results you will probably be able to gain a few tips as to how he found these out.

Good luck and I hope you will be able to make contact with some relatives.

The death certificate finally arrived this morning. As Simone and Dickiesam rightly suggested it is my relative. He is down as a retired Master Marine Rigger. He was living with one of his daughters at the time of his death which did take place in Shirley, Solihull.

So congratulations to both of the above for their acuity. I will now think about what to do next......having had some suggestions and pointers in the right direction.
