For queries within the area of Lancashire between the Ribble and the Mersey.
This board covers the areas of all our Groups - Liverpool, Southport, Warrington, Skelmersdale, Leigh and Widnes.
I gave a talk last called Family in Uniform to the Warrington Family History Group. One of the subjects in the talk was my dad Frank Ambrose who before he joined the army in 1940 was with the Liverpool Post Office working on telephones. He went into the King's Regiment and was transferred to the Royal Signals and was sent to Egypt in 1941 were he remained until summer 1945. Peter Joliffe chairman of the group said his dad was with the telephones in Liverpool and also with the Royal Signals in Egypt. I had a bit of a eureka moment remembering a photo I'd seen recently that I was sure had the name Joliffe on the back - it did I discovered when I got home and it was Peter's dad.
I wondered if anyone else claims any of these Liverpool men?
Photo of men by a lorry in the desert written on the back is
Dvr Woods (LV) sitting on bonnet
Standing Frank Ambrose (LV) my dad, Ted Hall (LV), Bert Johns, Sgt Bill Powell (LV), Tommy Joliffe (LV) (Peter's dad)
Front row Charlie Terry, Harry Anson (LV), Jim Dobson (LV)
My Dad was also in the Royal Signals in Egypt at the same time. I have quite a lot of photos of him and various others. I will try and post them very soon and see if your Dad and Peter's appear on them.
A very small world indeed.
Cheers

Amazing - it is a small world. I've sent the photo mentioned above to Mary to add to this but I have more! There are one or two others with names on them. What was your Dad's name?
I'll try and post a few more (or send them to Mary!!)
Photo has appeared - as if by magic! Sorry that if I enlarge it any more the faces become blurry, hope you can see them well enough - if anybody knows Hilary I don't think you will have any problems identifying which is her dad!!

My Dad was John L Campbell. Sadly not on your photo.
I have photo with a third of my dad's company on it, which I will scan and post on here later.
My Dad was in Tel Aviv, Cairo and Bagdad that I know of. Must check out his service record and get the company, places of service and dates.
Cheers

Or mum ? No chance of any names I suppose Peter?
Smashing pics, and so very interesting.
Noticing Daggers comment about the medal ribbon, the front right couple of men don't and the man on the right end could have perhaps part African ? heritage. Would that have been unusual then?
Anybody with any more? I may have a couple of my uncles I must look out.

Checked dad's medals as I have them, but none of the ribbons is like those in the picture. I wonder if it was some sort of unit emblem ? perhaps someone out there may know.
If you can find anyone you know on here it will be a miracle
However this is No 2 Company Paiforce Christmas 1942.
My Dad is the one behind the board on the front row.
This was in Tel Aviv Feb 1944

Hilary's picture has been rescanned and uploaded again, now clearer. Her dad on the left and Peter's on the right, there are great family likenesses with their fathers.
More of Hilary's photographs coming shortly.

The first one with nothing on the back I suspect was taken in England before Dad went to Egypt. According to his papers he was based at Foremarke in Derbyshire then. He is on the front rowthe tall one!
