help with Annie (nancy) Mcloughlin nee Walsh
Hallo Everyone, i`m fairly new to searching for ancestors but am finding it both addictive and frustrating!!
I am trying to trace the ancestors of Annie Walsh nee Mcloughlin
I am hoping some one will have Annie Walsh in their family tree or you experienced people can help me as to where to go from here.
Annie my grandmother (although I never new her) married James Mcloughlin on 8th October 1930 at At Alphonus RC church, her address at time of marriage was 98 Arlington st she was 24 and must have been 6 months pregnant at the time. Her fathers name is given as Thomas Walsh gas works labourer.
Annie died January 1935 her age is recorded as 28 her address was still 98 Arlington street.
My mum had only just turned 3 at the time of Annies death so has only very vague recollection of her. Mum was evacuated out of Liverpool at beginning of war, when she went back to visit her father she overheard someone refer to her as Nancy Walsh`s daughter that is how I have been able to trace her marriage and death certificate. Sadly that is as far as I have been able to go. She must have been 5/6 at time of 1911 census but none of the Annie Walsh`s living in Liverpool do not have father called Thomas. Mum has always believed both her parents came from Liverpool, but I don`t know no where to go with this.
I was so pleased to get her marriage certificate and find out her dads name so I could trace the family backwards and of course tell Mum if she ever had any Walsh Aunties/Uncles (if born before 1911 at least).
If anybody has got any suggestions or think they may have her in their family tree that would be wonderful.
sorry for the length of this post and also If I`ve put in the wrong place.
Thank you for taking the time to read it

Annie Walsh
Hi Jill and welcome,
Can you post the names of the witnesses on Annie's marriage certificate please? And does the cert say her father Thomas was deceased? Every little snippet of info is valuable.
And bear in mind that while Annie may have thought, in 1930, that her father was a gas works labourer, that may not have been his occupation in 1911 although he may have still been a labourer.
DS
Edit to add: The name Nancy is often used as a 'familiar' alternative to Agnes.

Annie Walsh
More questions..... Well one at least.....
Who was the informant named on Annie's death certificate?
BTW, in the census that Annie would appear in for the first time, there is a
an Annie [bn abt 1904] with parents Thomas and Jessie [bn abt 1868 & 1869], abode is 38 Frank Street, Toxteth, and Thomas is a dock labourer. Annie has 5 siblings.

Thank you so much for your replies and taking the time to do some research.
I`m afraid the only things I know about Annie Walsh for certain ( apart from she is my maternal grandmother) is she was known as Nancy she married James Mcloughlin 8th Oct 1930 when was was 24yrs old and 6 mths pregnant ( unless mum was born early ) She died 20th Jan 1935 aged 28 yrs. Her address at time of death was 98 Arlington street the same address she was living at time of marriage. Her fathers name on marriage certificate is Thomas Walsh gas work labourer.
I have just passed the marriage and death certificate on to my mum but I do know I could not make out the witnesses to her marriage except for one name, James Mckenna but think that may be the priest. Thomas Walsh is not described as deceased. Her widower James Mcloughlin was the informant of her death.
Although mum only ever knew her mother as being Nancy I am certain that she was an Annie, her date of death fits to the time that mum would have lost her mother, also mum remembers living at 98 Arlington street until she was evacuated.
I should mention that a search for my mums birth does give Walsh as her mothers maiden name so have at least got that right!!
I have been working on a 1906 date of birth for Annie given that I know she was 24 on 8th Oct 1930 at time of marriage and 28 on 20th January 1935 at time of death but of course I have no idea if these ages where recorded accurately.
My mum is an only child although she did think she may have had a brother called Tommy who died but I can find no other birth of a child with Mcloughlin / Walsh parents and although she can remember her mother she can not remember another child in the house, actually apart from a possible Aunt Kate who lived in lemon street and an Uncle Maurice who was killed when his ship was torpedo`d during WW2, and these may just be people she called aunt/uncle, she does not remember any other relatives on either of her parents side.
Just a bit of information on her father James Mcloughlin we think he was born 1900/1901 in Liverpool, He married Annie Walsh 8th Oct 1930 when he was 29 his address is given as 6 Blackstone street his occupation Dock worker, his father Patrick Mcloughlin deceased whose occupation is described as a seaman. James married again to a Lillian Williams ( I think, he certainly married a lady by the name of lily not to long after my mother had married) He was a widower again by 1974 , James remained in Liverpool until 1980 when he came to live with my parents until his death in 1982 his age at death is given as 81 he is actually given a DOB of 27th January 1901 however mum does not have his birth certificate and I gather that he had always just said it was his birthday on that day and how old he was each year!
Other than their names, marriage and death dates I don`t know anything else concrete about my mothers parents. My mum had heard stories about her mother`s death when I presented her with her death certificate she cried bless her I am now trying to give Annie (nancy) a life - if that makes sense, thank you for helping me with this, I know I`m probably on an impossible quest with this though.

Hi, Just to let you know I and all of my siblings were born from
Arlington Street at no. 97 and next door to us lived a family named McKenna who were our cousins, my parents were also married at St Alphonsus on the 30th September 1930. my eldest sister was born in 1931.
(I was actually born in Stanley Hospital on Stanley Road at the "wait for it" weight of 13lbs 4ozs)

Annie Walsh & James McLoughlin
Re James McLoughlin....
Only these births registered in Liverpool between 1899 and 1902:
Births Dec 1899: McLoughlin, James - W. Derby - 8b - 544.
Births Sep 1900: McLoughlin, James Christopher - Toxteth Park - 8b - 192.
And for the most common surname variation...
Births Mar 1899: McLaughlin, James - W. Derby - 8b - 372.
Births Sep 1899: McLaughlin, James - Liverpool - 8b - 33.
Checked these births in 1901 but couldn't find one with a father Patrick or one with a mother as head of household if Patrick was a mariner and away from home.
In an earlier post I said I had found an Annie Walsh [bn abt 1905/6] with a father Thomas [labourer] in her first census from which I am unable to give any details. However, this is her parents and some older siblings in 1901:
WALSH, Thomas - Head - Married - 33 - Railway Worker - Chester, Cheshire.
WALSH, Jessie - Wife - 32 - Chester, Cheshire.
WALSH, Thomas - Son - 6 - Liverpool.
WALSH, Florrie - Dtr - 4 - Liverpool.
WALSH, William - Son - 0 (11 MOS) - Liverpool.
Address: 50c Rutter Street, Toxteth Park.
RG13 / Piece:3429 / Folio:56 / Page:15
Address: 50c Rutter Street, Toxteth Park.
I believe 50c indicates the cellar of #50 as most of the houses in Rutter Street have a household under the plain number and another household under the suffix 'c'.
This Annie.. Births Jun 1904: WALSH, Annie - Toxteth Park - 8b - 200, is the only one with a father Thomas [labourer] in the general Liverpool area. Her birth year calculated from her marriage and death certs could be out by a couple of years.
DS
PS: Marriage Jun 1889 - Chester - 8a - 624: WALSH, Thomas and WILLIAMS, Jessie.

That Toxteth Park one was one I was thinking of, just that it's not common for families to move from the south side to the north side of Liverpool - not that it didn't happen, but if there had been an entry for the north side I would have favoured it over a Toxteth one.
There are also a birth entry for
James McLoughlan Oct-Nov-Dec 1900 Liverpool 8b 116 and
James Edward McLachlan Jul-Aug-Sep 1901 West Derby 8b 468

Re: North Enders v South Enders
I couldn't find census information to back my people up but when I was looking at records for Arlington Street I noticed one of those unusual entries where you get a very specific birth place entered. The person in Arlington Street had said they had been born in Hornby Street one of the streets connected to my North Enders.

Goodness me think I am going to get back all the census forms I`m on and put big notices on them saying "yes its me I`m here your great great aunty Jill" just so no poor relative of mine is ever tearing there hair out trying to trace me
Thank you all for your research I am very grateful. The baptism of a James Mcloughlin at st Augustine RC church does seem to fit perfectly with what we think is his birth date and fathers name. Is it common to find baptism records but no birth registrations? Also why do you think this family would not show on census of 1901 with 4 mth baby or on 1911 with 10 yr child?
I have found an Ann Walsh born 18th Jan 1906 but she died 1996 so not my Annie ( although does not mean this Ann Walsh is the same Ann Walsh that was baptised at Our Lady of Reconcilition I`m just thinking that the DOB fits)
Just done a death search for the Thomas Walsh born 1886 to see if I could eliminate him if he died before 1930, but there are 4 Thomas Walsh`s born 1886 still alive after 1930 ( not that I wanted the poor man to have an early death but it would have helped if there was no Thomas Walsh born 1886 alive by 1930 in Liverpool!!)
I am intrigued by a family know as Mckenna living at 98 Arlington street, Annie and then her husband and child must have been lodgers, mum certainly lived there until beginning of war, but she only remembers living alone with her father after her mothers death! She has always refered to going up stairs when she came in from play or school so maybe they rented the upstairs bedrooms? I`m also wondering that the James Mckenna whose name appears on Annie & James`s marriage certificate who I thought might be the priest is in fact a member of the family that lived at 98 Arlington st. The smallest snippet of information is just lovely when I know virtually next to nothing.
Once again thank you so much for all your help.

Hi,
A little bit more information,
Arlington Street and Lamb Street ran side by side at the Bootle end of the railway bridge on Stanley Road,
They were both destroyed in the May Blitz of 1941. and never rebuilt, but the nameplate for Arlington Street is still on the wall.
from hearing conversations throughout my life I think the houses were tenements, ground floor accommodations, and first floor accommodations
I am going to see my eldest sister this week and get all the info I can.
I seem to remember my older siblings went to St Aloysius school it would be RC as we are all RC
kind regards John

We don't have access online to the marriage at that date, so I wonder if you are able to upload a scanned copy of the relevant part of it so that we could all try to make out the names.

Ann Walsh had two sisters called Mary and Bridget. Bridget married a Thomas Thompson in 1926 and Mary married a William Thompson in 1929. The last available census shows both Thomas and William Thompson with their family at 82 Arlington Street. Mary Walsh's baptism record includes a note about her marriage to William Thompson in 1929 and the witnesses are Thomas Thompson and Ann Walsh. The Walsh family appear as "Welsh" on the 1901 Census.

For some reason my PC will not down load from our scanner, but my husband is going to take the marriage certificate to work and scan it on to a dongle ( that means nothing to me but he seems to know what he is doing!!!) so hopefully we will be able to download it tomorrow.
Chatting to mum today has reveled she had an auntie? in the USA possibly a Mary or May Cornfield/ Corfield. This lady sent mum a dolls pram and apparently asked if mum could be sent out to live with her but mum`s father refused. Seeing how this lovely lady went to the expense of sending a gift from USA and requested mum went to live with her it does sound as though she may have been a close relative of either James Mcloughlin or Annie Walsh.

Annie's birth may have been registered as Welsh both Walsh and Welsh are variations of the same Irish surname. As the surname suggests it comes from a description of the Welsh people who settled in Ireland after the Anglo-Norman takeover. Bridget and Patrick's births were also registered as Welsh. I checked for a baptism entry for an Annie Welsh born in early 1906 and there isn't one so it looks like this is Annie Walsh's birth registration:-
Event: Birth
Year: 1906
Name: Annie Welsh
District: Liverpool
Quarter: Jan/Feb/Mar
Volume: 8b
Page: 23
The family had another daughter called Rose Ann in 1908 she too was registered as Welsh:-
Event: Birth
Year: 1908
Name: Rose Ann Welsh
District: Liverpool
Quarter: Jan/Feb/Mar
Volume: 8b
Page: 52
Patrick died aged 4 years old in 1908 and was buried at Ford Cemetery on 13 July 1908. His burial record tells us where we will find this family under the surname Welsh in the next census in a few years time. The address in the burial record is:-
6 Court 8 House Eldon Street
Thomas Walsh died aged about 35 years old he was buried at Ford Cemetery on 6 January 1910. His place of death was the "Workhouse" the registration district for his death was West Derby so he will have died at Walton Hospital.
