Susan Jennison in 1891!
Hi Simone,
This is her marriage:
Marriage Sep 1863 - W Derby - 8b - 573: BERNIE, Susan & JENNISON Alfred.
And in 1891 she is with her parents..
BERNIE, Robert - Head - Md - 79 - Tailor - Hull, Yorkshire.
BERNIE, Betsy - Wife - 78 - Bury, Lancs.
JENISON, Susan - Dtr - Md - 51 - Liverpool.
Address: 23 West Derby Street, West Derby, Liverpool.
RG12 - Piece:2987 - Folio:121 - Page:17
In 1901 she is back with spouse Alfred and daughters Mary and Alice at 11 Kellitt Road, Wavertree.
Still haven't found the baby yet! If his birth year is right there are no matching deaths [YoB 1891 +/- 2] up to 1991 apart from these 2..
JENNISON, Frank C - Yorkshire, Scarborough - 1918
JENNISON, Francis - Yorkshire, Scarborough - 1924
So I suspect the child may have been fostered or taken as a 'nurse child', was given the foster family surname and it stuck. Come across that before. Or, because the Jennison name seems to be primarily a Yorkshire name, maybe the child was born up there and a relative took the child as their own.

Illegitimate birth
Thanks for suggestions on Frank Jennison. His mother did marry Walter Howlett Beattie & have 4 children to this marriage. Annie Jane Beattie died in 1918. Did a child have to a name before being fostered or adopted.

Hi Simmo
Could you give us the link to the baptism please? I'm hoping there may be more info??
Frank could have been born Francis, known as Frank by the time of his baptism at which age?
What a puzzle!
And the street name too is unknown.
I can't find Frank anywhere..

Re: Illegitimate birth
The child could be called whatever name a family wanted. Back in the days of 'good neighbours' there were normally a few ways of raising an 'unwanted' child. There was 'official' and unofficial fostering. In the former case a family would receive a small payment to cover the costs. In the latter it would probably be a good-hearted neighbour who would take the child in. Then there was the system of 'nurse-child' very similar to official fostering. Or, the child could be put into an orphanage as a baby and often 'forgotten' about. If the child was born in a convent where the nuns took in pregnant unmarried women, the child would almost certainly have been taken away from the mother and handed over to a family, often middle-class, for a small 'consideration' or donation to the convent funds. Formal adoption did not exist until 1925.hal blackmore wrote:Thanks for suggestions on Frank Jennison. Did a child have to a name before being fostered or adopted.

Hi Tina
The baptism is in the Liverpool records on Ancestry... I have tried to look at the family McGuffie who also had a child baptised that same day.. but their address was Canal Street, so Iwas wondering if Ann's address could have been Canal Street but mistakenly heard by vicar
There are acouple of baptisms at that time with Canal Street as address. Found the family but couldn't see anything around them to give any weight to that theory
Another though I had was Canning Street
but these baptisms all seen to be Bootle area....

Good find Alison! I had a job finding it elsewhere though. It was transcribed as Jinies. Have to say it looks like it could be Jinies on the GRO Index despite 2 transcribers on FreeBMD having Jiniss. But like you, I could not find a subsequent M or D for him later.Alison C wrote:Re: the missing birth registration. There is a birth entry for Q2 1891 for:
JINISS Frank Liverpool 8b 90
Could this be him ?
I can't see any marriage or deaths for a Frank Jiniss and he doesn't appear on any censuses

Hi again,
Done a little more digging to see what happened to Frank.
1901 Census shows a Frank Jennies (FMP shows Jennis) aged 10 living in Kirkdale as a boarder.
No sign in later census
FreeBMD shows:
Marriage of Frank Jennis to Annie Abram in Q3 1916 West Derby 8b 1023
Birth of Eileen Jennis (Abram) in Q1 1917.
FamilySearch then shows a death notice for Frank Jennis in NSW in 1954:
JENNIS, Frank - January 18 1954 at his residence 189 Dora Street Hurstville, dearly loved husband of Annie, and dear father of Eileen (Mrs O Buckley), Marie (Mrs R Turner), Frank, Winnie (Mrs R Seabrook) and Daphne (Mrs N Bannon), aged 62 years, at rest.
..so Frank Jennis's age does tie in with Frank Jennison.
The NSW BMD site shows his mother's given name as Annie
and his father's given name as Frank (?)

Great info Alison
The free index on www.findmypast.co.uk shows a F Jennis bn 1892, A Jennis bn 1897 and a AE Jennis born 1917 all going to Australia in 1923.
The index also shows a A Jennis born 1897 going to Australia in 1956 maybe a visit after her husband's death?
The incoming lists on Ancestry show A Jennis bn 24 December 1895 aged 60 arriving in 1956 going to Tilston Road Fazakerley. She was coming for 6 months.
