Hello,
Hoping that someone is researching these families. Thomas Moore--mygggrandfather--and Catherine Roughsedge. At least I think Thomas married Catherine Roughsedge. I have located the marriage in 1839 in St. Philips church Liverpool, and she appears to be the most likely person. I found the date entered on a census.
the marriage shows both father's having the first name of John. John Moore a shoemaker and John Roughsedge a cow keeper.
I also have got Catherines death certificate which shows her birth place as ST. Helens Lancashire.
They had a son John born 1840 Liverpool, then a daughter Ann E.
they next left England and went to New York. I have them on the 1851 census there. Had a couple more kids and moved to Ontario Canada, having more children there. They next headed to Manitoba, where both of them died.
I would love to find out something about these families.
Thank You
Pepperpot

Welcome to our forum
I think you need to give us a little more information
Is this correct
Catherine was born according to her death certificate in St helens Lancashire - when was she born?
She may be called Roughsedge as you have found a likely marriage in Liverpool in 1839
She has John born 1840 in Liverpool - what evidence do you have for this and do you have his birth certificate? There is another child Ann E no date given
By 1851 they show in the New York census. Should this be 1850? Do you have them entering America?
They then have more children and go to Canada
Do you have any of the children's birth certificates as they will give Catherine's maiden name. If you don't you need to get one as this will make it much easier to track the family in England. Otherwise you could be following the wrong family!!

I can't agree more wholeheartedly with Hilary that you need to confirm Catherine's name by means of the birth certificate of one of the children. Unfortunately I don't see - online - any baptisms for John and Ann E, although this often doesn't help anyway.
You need to order a certificate from either the Liverpool Register Office or the GRO, which you can do online at www.gro.gov.uk (cost £9.25 or equivalent) and confirm with them that you only want the certificate if the parents are Thomas and Catherine Moore - don't give Catherine's surname.
I was wondering about the "St Helens" given on the death certificate, although this information would have been given by somebody other than herself and so may not be accurate but looking around I wondered if there would be any means to verify it.
Thanks to Tina's post we can identify an Ellen Roughsedge as witness to the marriage of Cathering Roughsedge. Assuming that this may have been a sister I searched for a marriage for Ellen and discovered one on 10 March, 1840 at St Mary's, Edge Hill.
Henry Mercer Full Age Bachelor Joiner West Derby
Father William Mercer Joiner
to Ellen Roughsedge Full Age Spinster Liverpool
Father John Roughsedge Cowkeeper
Witnesses Ellen ?? possibly Mercer and Robert Roughsedge
This seemed a good match to me so checking the 1851 census living in Hurst Street are
Henry Mercer Head M 33 Joiner West Derby Lancashire
Ellen Wife M 34 Harrow, Cheshire
Thomas Son 9 Scholar West Derby, Lancashire
John son 7 " " "
Ann daur 4 " "
Margaret daur 1 " "
Ellen Roughsedge Mother In Law Widow 69 Woolton, Lancashire
HO107; Piece: 2192; Folio: 709; Page: 2
Unfortunately I have been unable to confirm that there may have been a brother "Robert" however there is one in the 1861 census, married to an Elizabeth, whose birthplace is given as Landican, Cheshire (just matching up with Ellen's).
So clues to the family are not conclusive and you need that birth certificate to confirm.

Hello all and thanks very much for the ideas. I think I may be jumping forward a bit but was just hoping someone may be researching these families.
On Catherines death certificate I think that the place of birth is probably right as it is her son who is the informant.
I have picked up the family on all the census except the 1871 in Canada and the 1841 in England. It was the 1861 census that gave the year that they were married as 1839. There are also a lot of other Moore's on that cenujs as well. And yes it was the 1850 US census they were on.
I have found the Christening of the first son John although it does not show Catherines maiden name. Have not located antyhing for Ann yet.
I also found Ellen Roughsedge and her marriage and think it is likely she is Catherine's sister.
The children are as follows:
John born 1840 England
Ann E born 1842 England
Mary C--born 1850 New York
Sarah J --born 1853 New York
Thomas H born 1885 New york
Alice M born 1858 Upper Canada
Charles Robert born 1860 Upper Canada
Frederick born 1862 Upper Canada
As there is not birth registrations in Canada until 1869 unable to get them.
I think I will have to get John's birth certificate and hope that has the answer on it.
I have looked through ships lists but no luck finding them leaving England.
So once again thank you all , it is very much appreciated .

But because of the differences given in birthplace, she may not be YOUR Catherine's sister, which is why you need the birth certificate of one of the children to confirm Catherine's maiden name.pepperpot wrote:I also found Ellen Roughsedge and her marriage and think it is likely she is Catherine's sister.
