Hi Colette,
My first take on the A word is 'annul(ar)'. Means ring-shaped, but 'circular' doesn't fit with the 18 x 14. Or could it be an oval frame 18 tall x 14 wide? I remember a couple of big oval-framed sepia photos in my gran's house.

Yes it looks like an 8 sided frame the picture is my cousins she bourght it in a car boot sale..i guess she would like to find out who the man is..

the only M Launer i can find was a Max Launer who married in Manchester 1928..dont know if he was a photographer or not.cant see him 1911ish,,cant find birth for him so maybe born abroad..

Hi,
The sitter looks as though he is a priest or member of a religious order. That high-buttoned waistcoat and what appears to be a collarless coat or jacket?

Like you I can't find M Launer either, but I had better luck with J Fletcher. In 1910ish there are at least 2 photographers with that name. There's a James Herbert Fletcher aged 23 and he's a photographer in Barnsley, Yorkshire. And plain James F aged 42 up in County Durham.

You might get help in identifying the photographer here: http://www.bipp.com/Default.aspx?tabid=40 There's a contact facility under the About Us tab.

Who is he?

Post by dickiesam »

Hi,
This should be a 200% enlargement...

Image

Check out the way his 'under collar' [almost a small cravat] is a cross-over style. Do you have a 'friendly' local priest/vicar who might know the mode of dress?

Edit to add: my Welsh wife says the dress reminds her of the old non-conformist ministers such as Wesleyan, Baptist, etc. Maybe Scots?
