H F Claydon GM Updated - new material found!
They are held in the Liverpool Record Office, very few of the Police Records are available but you may have more luck with the Watch Committee Books.
I don't know if they are on microfilm or documents so you would need to check before you go in case you have to order them at Sandhills. I did try to check the catalogue but the service is unavailable at present. Check it later

Mary and Katie
Thank you for your posts.
I am clearly dim! I have searched the ref given by Katie on the Liverpool Record site to no avail!
I think I will have to make a visit.
Thanks to the efforts of you all, I am in contact with the graet nephew of "Nellie Walsh" who was one of those rescued from the rubble of Adlington Street. I will post further information as it comes to light.

Keep a check on the Record Office updates http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=9679
However so far as I am aware everything is still available, all microfilms are at the World Museum and any documents can be retrieved from the archives and viewed at Sandhills.

Katie, Hilary and Mary,
Thank you all.
I am pleased to confirm that I am now in touch with Nellie Walsh's great nephew who informs me that her name was actualy "Helen".
Nellie sounds to have been a remarkable woman, not only did she survive the war, she went on to raise 10 of her own children, her younger sister and the surviving children of her late sister who had been killed on the 12/13th March 1941!

Under the heading " Decorations for Heroism Arising out of War Acivities in Liverpool ", Harold's entry reads:-
" Gallant conduct displayed in the rescue of persons from demolished tenements in Adlington Street on the 13.3.1941."
Taken from the Chief Constables report
Harold's collar number was 36 'A'. Does the 'A' indicate A Division?

That would be great Katie thank you
He was Constable Frank Ambrose 238A He served from 1919 - 1945. According to my notes he received
Medal from Liverpool Police Watch Committee in 1939 (that was for something before the war
Margaret Wheatley Cross from RSPCA in 1942
Royal Life Saving Society medal in 1944
Earlier 1933 a Liverpool and Shipwreck and Humane Society medal
I have seen all the medals. His beat was apparently around the Pier Head area.

The medal from the Watch Committee would I suspect have been his long service award.

May I say a public "thank you" to Kathy who has very kindly copied a newspaper report on the incident as well as information regarding the raids on Liverpool.
My research is progressing well and I have made contact with relatives of Mrs Fagerass and Nellie Walsh and hope to have photos of those rescued in the near future!

I have been carrying out further research on Harold Claydon. In addition to the George Medal, I have discovered that as an Inspector, he was awarded a Watch Committee merit badge (along with Inspector Phillips) for disposing of a home made incendiary device which had been placed in premises in Sir Thomas Street 27th Jan 1959.

Now that's lovely, typical of it's date, I can see the style set by our Queen in the bride's style and outfit and I'm sure many of us can identify our grandmothers with the two ladies, I'm sure I remember mine having just that flowered frock and that hat!!!
Thanks for posting Mark.
