James McLean missing from 1891 census
James McLean missing from 1891 census
There is a James McLean from Liverpool in Gillingham Gaol at the time of the 1891 census but I am having trouble accessing records to prove he is mine. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction please.
I think you need to check the Quarter Sessions records which should be available at the Record Office.
Just having a look at the old newspapers at present to see if there is an entry for him between 1881 and 1891. Can you confirm that he was in Liverpool in 1881 to hope for an entry in the local Liverpool paper rather than for anywhere else? Also what is his date of birth?

I don't see anything in the old newspapers that would relate to this man, although if an offence took place in Kent I haven't seen any entries for that area so am not aware of whether they are available online or not.

From Criminal Registers
Liverpool Assizes 10 May, 1887
James McLean
Burglary (Three Indictments) and (on another Indictment)
wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm
7 years in respect of the three Indictments for Burglary and
15 years in respect of the Indictment for wounding the sentence of
7 years to be concurrent with the sentence of 15 years penal servitude.
I'm sorry to say that this is the only I can find with a sentence long enough to carry him over 1891.

Hi Mary
If it's not James, someone may Google and find lots of info from your post. Good one.
I was just wondering why he would be in Chatham? Navy??
Just a thought.

I don't know - would they imprison somebody out of the area if it were a more serious offence ?
