J R Turner Tobacconist - Fenwick Street Liverpool

Post by dlh1 »

Hi all,

I'm looking for information on the tobacconist Joseph Rowland Turner who had a tobacco shop on Fenwick Street. Does anyone know where I can find more information on this, possibly pictures etc? I've searched online but can't find anything.

Any info would be very helpful,

Many thanks,

Perhaps you could give an approximate date and then we can check any trade directories that we may have.

My friend worked there in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. I believe his father may have owned the shop before then. He died in about 1963 I believe so would love to try and find out when the shop closed. It's not a little cafe.

I'm afraid the latest I have is 1900, perhaps you could check the Historical Directories site, or maybe one of the crew will see this post and check a later directory. If they are asleep or on holiday, perhaps a pm would bring a response. Check this list and contact Erika or Jan who have directories more in the time you need. http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=6906

Hi folks
1938 Gores/Kellys has Jsph.Roland Turner (Turner's) Tbccnst
Norbury, Broad Green Rd, Roby (this could be his home address?)
Nothing in Fenwick St, mostly brokers, one cafe and a wine shop.
I'll ask a couple of pals who have later directories.

Hi Tina, thanks for checking. Is Turmeau's noted in that directory? it's quite a famous cigar shop, a branch of a main one in Chester, but it's been there ever since I can remember and that would have been in the 1970's when I worked in town but I don't know how long before that. Thinking that Fenwick Street isn't all that big to have two tobacconists in business at the same time.

Kelly's 1968 has Finlay & Co, tobacconist, between the Corn Exchange and Old Ropery.

Checking the map, this is where Turmeau's is now.

Yes they have been at other Liverpool addresses before Fenwick Street. I think from the findings I wonder if this tobacconist is the one being searched for, just having changed hands a number of times over the years.

Many thanks for your help.

Tina, that sounds about right.

I wish I could find an image of the store as it was back in the 40's. Apparently he was the only tobacconist with his own customs dept.

It's some time since I was in Fenwick Street and cannot remember whether the tobacconist was in or near the Corn Exchange Building. That was rebuilt after destruction in the Blitz, so there may have been a bit of re-housing.

If you look on maps.google.co.uk and drag the little yellow man onto the street you will be able to see the building.
