Good Morning, Tina, et all.

I did not know what a wooley back was either so I typed it on Google. The result was surprising. The second one down - Urban Dictionary - seems to identify the term to Liverpool but I would be reluctant to say that to someone's face. I would probably end up with a 'fourpny one'.

I googled to see what you had come up with and I suppose that may well be the origins of the term, just glad Ali hasn't taken my comment as derogatory, I'm sure she knows it wasn't meant to be. Generally we just mean it to mean somebody who live/d just outside the main Liverpool area - ie up the road in St Helens would be the same.

Hello Mary A,

I think you are absolutely correct about Ali. She does not seem to be that kind of person. However, the origin of my inquiry, EMG, has certainly taken an interesting set of diversions. I am enjoying the banter that it has produced. I suspect that both Ali and Tina are asleep just now so something else may develope.

I have been reading Dickiesam's inquiry about the Daggs and Tina has certainly come up with the goods. My son has asked me why do people do these sort of inquiries for other people that they do not know. I replied that I can't answer that in a word but what I have learnt is that everyone portrays a sense of fun, sincerity and comaraderie that is all too lacking in many other interests.

There's a wide variety of reasons, one main one is the love of the hunt, the eureka moment when you get a good result, the - sometimes amazing - uncovering of unknown facts, camaraderie and I'm sure the crew can give you plenty of more reasons and they don't all need to be connected with our own families to give us fun.

We learn new "tricks" as we research for others and this helps us with our own and we also know that if we needed help ourselves we have a group of friends who we can call on and will go out of their way to assist.

It's a pity it's holidaytime as a couple of others from the crew would no doubt give you more reasons, one gets the bit between her teeth and hates to be beaten.

Why are people hooked on crossword puzzles? well this is more interesting and more fun than them.

I don't even want to try to put it better. I love the term Eureka Moment.

Thanks

Hello Clatterbridgegirl1967, Ali,

I have received an explanation of the "Identification" of EMG on her passport application. It is from a lady in Equadore who has been assisting me via the Roots site. the person who "Identified" EMG is shown as John W Haden.

She says "On the 1920 Census, there was a John W. Haden in East Atlanta, De Kalb County, Georgia. He was an auditor in a dry goods store. The 'Atlanta Journal Constitution' (the local newspaper which published the info. about Joseph Jansen going into business in Bayonne) has literally hundreds of mentions of 'M. Rich & Bros'. It was a dry goods store and a frequent advertiser in the newspaper. It seems likely. then, that this John W Haden was Edith's witness on her passport application and that she had the passport sent to his place of business (M. Rich & Bros) rather than to her own residence".

Although this is all academic now, it serves as a very good interpretation of the document.

Hi Phil

Makes perfect sense, I though it looked more like a name than a place, excellent find!
