Wow! If ever I track down my Towies (Sligo) I shall be off on a hunt for records! We lived in Londonderry for a year but weren't "permitted" to travel freely. Darn shame as the beauty of the area we lived in was enough to make me want more!
Still waiting for this much awaited info from Dublin - boy, am I impatient!

Update:

Whoop whoop! Had a reply from the "nice" lady at the Smyly Trust. She says there ARE records for a Breakey family in/around 1889 but......could I possibly get the person I'm researching for to send her an e-mail giving her the okay to let me have the records. Almost a result....hang on in there folks!

More news folks: Wee Oswald Breakey was born in Dublin Workhouse, January 1911. No other info (apart from Mammy's name) on the cert - which arrived this morning. No complaints at the speed of GRO Roscommon! I can't help feeling Mary Breakey's tale is going to be a very sad one.

The workhouse records are probably lodged somewhere. They may be useful.

Must admit I gave that a fleeting thought Hilary.....and the "nice" lady (at Mrs Smyly's homes) is going to the archives in a week or so - I shall e-mail her and ask if there's any chance of her having a peep at them for me! I have this horrible feeling about Mary Breakey having a dreadful life until she came to England....but then she had no more little ones after her marriage. That's got to be unusual in those days!

Update! Heard from the nice lady in Dublin today. She can find no record whatsoever of Mary Breaky/Breakey's admittance to the Birds Nest Institution BUT she has provided records of two more Breakey's being put forward to enter Homes for Homeless Boys! The mother of one of these sad souls is named as Mary Breakey. They lived in Bow St, Dublin. Father a porter, mother a charwoman. Nice lady is going back to the archives next week as she's found the existance of another box of records and, in her words, "can't let this one lie". So.......the hunt continues!

She certainly does sound like a nice lady :D

I think you should suggest to her that she becomes an official genealogist, I bet we could get some work for her and she could then be paid for her visits to the National Archives!

I certainly will suggest that Mary. I'm not exactly sure of what her job is to be honest! The fact that she said she "couldn't let it lie" leads me to think she has an interest in past history. Wouldn't it be nice to have someone with easy access to all those superb records? The two records she sent me have me absolutely fascinated....one is from 1886!
