William Henry Alexander Woodward

Post by BarbaraH »

Hi, I have him born Liverpool 1808 - son of John Woodward, Chapel St, (cooper) and his wife Charlotte (baptism St Paul 6 Nov 1808). In later censuses WHA Woodward also a cooper.

However, from Ancestry there's a marriage for John Woodward, cooper, married Catherine Hepton by licence St Anne Richmond 25 Dec 1806.
Then a baptism for an Anne Woodward 13.4.1808 dau of John WoodwardS, Benns Gdns, cooper, and Catherine Hepton his wife.

So dont believe that Catherine hepton was WHAW's mother but the only marriage for a John to a Charlotte is 1810 - JW cooper to Charlotte Symcock. i.e. 2 years after birth of WHAW.

Is there any chance that Gore's directory may have John Woodward (or WOodwards) listed?

Any help much appreciated.
Regards
Barbara

Hi Barbara

Looked in Gore's 1821 and 1843 for John Woodward, but nothing listed for him. There are Woodwards listed but none as a cooper and nothing for those addresses.

In 1860 there is a William Woodward , cooper at 16 Belle Street.

Not a great deal of help I'm afraid.

Cheers
Erika :D

Just checked 1796 Gore's and there is a Thomas Woodward, cooper 13 Fazakerley St, Oldhall St.
Don't know if he could be a relation?

Lewis's Directory of 1790 has only the same entry for Thomas Woodward, cooper 13 Fazakerley St, no John's who are coopers.

Interesting baptism 1837 St Pauls
Wm Hy Alx Woodward father same name, mother Charlotte.
Address is Johnson St occ Cooper.

Could there have been an error with the mother's name in baptism 1808
born 17.10.1808
not Charlotte but Catherine??
However, two kiddies born so close together, must be 2 Mums??
Anne 22.3.1808 birth

You know what we always say - don't take the IGI or any other database as gospel until you have seen the original for yourself. I can imagine a Charlotte to easily be mistaken for a Catherine or the other way round.

However if he was brought up by a stepmother might he have considered her to be "mum".

Maybe a check for a burial of a Catherine before 1810 might bring a result?

It wouldn't be unusual to find a man on his own with a couple of small children marrying because he needed a mum to help out with them.

There's also an earlier baptism at St Paul's - 27 September, 1835, Sarah Ann, also at Johnson Street, parents William and Charlotte.

So you have the right family in 1841 at Wigby's Court, Johnson Street
Wm 35 Cooper, Charlotte 35, Richard 13, Sarah 6, William 4, Amelia 3, Elizabeth 9 months.

I know you probably have that information, but just stating it for any lookers.

There's a big gap between Richard and Sarah, and no sign of a Charlotte, but then she might have been of an age to go out to work.

Do you know if Richard is the son of William and Charlotte? I only found a baptism for a son of John the Victualler and Ellen, of London Road, 13 Jul 1830 St Peter.

I think we've strayed from the original search of William's father here. :D

William Henry Alexander Woodward

Hi everyone - many thanks for all the input. Very confused now!

Before going south on Fri am, did print off some Woodward births fm IGI to see if I could find WHAW's father - it gave quite a selection but there was a John WoodwardS b 1783 to Thomas WoodwardS & Mary - which could tie into the Thomas Woodward cooper in Lewis's 1790. The other option was a John Woodward b 1787 to Jeremiah & Jane.

So still none the wiser as to who WHAW's mother was! But you have given me 2 siblings I hadnt found (as hadnt found the 41/51 census for him) being Charlotte (b 1826) and Richard (b 1828). I had Wlm H A Woodward marrying Charlotte (Owens?) 1834 St Thomas Liverpool and the first child being Sarah Ann b 1835. So guess his first wife died pre 1834.
Its actually Sarah Ann who started the research - she married John Jones (ha! easy to trace!) 1857 St Pauls and is the grt g'mother of the friend for whom Im doing (trying to do!) the research.

Many thanks again.
Regards
Barbara

Right, when WHAW married Charlotte, she must have been widowed with 2 children, Charlotte & Richard. Her first husband being Richard Hughes.
Just to put that one to bed!

I was just going to say that I would have thought at least Charlotte would have been from her mother's first marriage rather than William's.
