Address, any ideas please?

Post by erika »

Hi All

Was hoping someone could decipher the name of this street on a marriage certificate please.
The couple were married at St Nathanial, Windsor, West Derby.
The bride's address was Hop Street.
I've looked through my directories and can't find Hop Street anywhere, hoping to get a clue for the other street. It is definitely Hop Street not Hope Street, as I have the name on lots of other documents too.

Looking forward to your thoughts

Yes, Hop St was listed in the index to my battered old road atlas of south Lancs, but I have not yet found it with the naked eye. It should be roughly in the area bounded by Wavertree Road, Upper Parliament Street, Kinglake St, and Edge Hill station. More later with a lens, if it was big enough to be printed on the map.

PS A little digging produced a cluster of 'court' houses in Malt Street, Hop St etc in the 1880s. I have found Malt Street in the triangle of Upper Parliament St, Falkner St & Smithdown Lane. Googling brought up another FH forum where they are mentioned without much pleasure, by the sound of it! Hop St must have been nearby but perhaps had been cleared by the time of my atlas.

What's the bridgroom and his father's name and when did the marriage take place? Thought perhaps if i could find them on a census it might help.

Thanks Daggers for the info on Hop St. I thought it must be a grim area as it never showed up in the directories

Hilary

The bridegroom's name was Robert Parry and the father Thomas, but deceased at the time of the marriage in 1925.
I have found the father I think in 1901 at 16 Downe St.

I haven't got access to the SSSHHHH census, so am unable to check on there.
Robert had a brother John, I believe, as I think they both married sisters which are my gt uncle's daughters.

Have just found Hop St on my Alan Godfrey map 1905.
Nearby is Dinorben Street near St Nathaniel Church.

Looks like that maybe the name on the certificate, what do you think?

Hi Erika
If you could give us the age from the marriage cert, we can look in 19## for Robert and his bro John.

Hi Folks

Sorry for delay in replying, but thieves stole a load of copper wire and knocked out phone lines/internet for 30,000 homes on Thursday night. I'm lucky mine has been restored this morning but others maybe another 48hrs.
Just when I was getting my teeth into something too, very frustrating

Anyway thanks to a lovely forum member, she has provided me with SSSHHH details and I think I have the right Parry boys.
Not sure the 1901 details I had are correct, as the SSSHHH record has the wife as Catherine. Will check later on that one.

Yes Tina those are the correct marriages you found. Thanks. It was on Robert's cert I found the Dinorben St that I couldn't read.

Thanks too LindaS for confirming the street.

However in SSSHHH the family were at Claypole Street, so everyone had moved on in any case.

Thanks again to you all for your help :D All very much appreciated.

Cheers
