Bello Midghall
How wonderful that these posts are available. I have researched the Midghall family and was just beginning the Bello line. Thanks for all of this great information. Ali, which of Mary Victoria's siblings is your gg-grandfather. Alice Ann had many siblings and extended family in the U.S. The leads that you have received from this board are correct. I would like to email you privately.

Liverpool Convents
Hi Found out Alice Bello was considered too dark skinned by her mothers second husband so grew up in a convent in liverpool.
I did a search on bing but didnt come up with much.
Does anyone know how many convents were in Liverpool and would they have kept records? Bit confused why she wasnt adopted given her mother surrendered her and the father was deceased.

Probably because there wasn't any formal adoption until 1927.Clatterbridgegirl1967 wrote: Bit confused why she wasnt adopted given her mother surrendered her and the father was deceased.
There were quite a number of institutions she could have been placed with, as an example Jan found information on some in the Woolton area http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... ht=convent you would need to check with the Liverpool Record Office for any records, not all of them would have been kept but fingers crossed, and also that they are not closed under the 100 year rule.

Alice Bello
Ali,
Based upon the sources available on the Internet including Mary Victoria Midghall's U. S,. Passport Application, issue date 2 Oct 1919, her second husband was a member of the U.S. Navy, thereby providing her and her son the ability to go to America. Further records about this family indicate that she would have been traveling with her eldest son of this second marriage and pregnant with her second son from the same marriage. I wonder if Alice Bello couldn't go with them because she was not the child of this husband...Mary's children in the U.S. were aware that they had a sister/half-sister living with their grandmother, Alice Ann in Liverpool. Mary Victoria and her third husband always intended to bring her to the U.S., but could never afford to do so. Alice's mother shed many tears over the child she left behind. Paquinto Navarra was also Philippino, he and his children may have had dark complexions. From what source did you learn that Alice went to a convent...it is believed that she was raised in Liverpool by her grandmother.

Alice Bello Chung Awang
Hi All: I want to introduce myself. I am the great-grandson of Mary Victoria Midghall Bello. My grandmother is Alice Bello Chung Awang. My mother is Alice first daughter Nina Patricia. Thanks for all of the info on my family. Yes, the women in my family are into the "exotic" men. My aunt Toni went the other way and married two plain "vanillas" LOL
Hi Donald and welcome to the forum. I hope you two can progress your research.

Re: Alice Bello Born 1916/17 Liverpool
Mary Victoria Midghall is the sister of my great-grandmother (Theresa). This thread has been great reading.
I have been trying to find out more about the family, in particular Alexander Midghall the oldest brother. He was KIA in Hamel, France, and I have been trying to find out when he went overseas. I have his death on 4 January 1916. I got hold of the war diary of his regiment and found out what happened to him. I also have 2 letters sent to his mum from the OC's of the regiment. The thing I'm interested about is that he was never given the 1914-15 star. To get this he must have served overseas on or before 31 Dec 1915. So did he just get to the theater or has he been missed? In one of the letters he is described as loved by his peers and the other one alludes to some of his mates sending word back that he had been missing. I wouldn't have thought strong relationships like that could have developed in 4 or less days. Maybe the letters have been written with the aim to comfort his mother more, rather than describe what actually happened.
I believe his service records have been lost like many others. I don't know how else to find out. I've looked at his WO329 but unfortunately the dates aren't there.
The reason I am interested in Alex is that as far as I know, he never had any kids of his own. His medals would have been given to his mother, who is in my direct line. That would mean I would be able to wear originals or replicas of said medals when I march on Anzac day in Australia. It would be fantastic to honor his memory in this way.
