Hi,
Can anyone help out there. I am looking for James Ashley born in Liverpool 1872. I do not have any siblings for him but his fathers name is Thomas Ashley a labourer. I was hoping to find him in 1891 census but having no luck. He married Clara Davies in July 1891 his profession is Tent Maker, both their address’s are in Pembroke Street. He would still have been single when the 1891 census was taken.

I think Thomas is dead by 1881

Elizabeth Ashley widow 40 fire chip dealer (she is a bit confused on her age!)
William Ashley son 10
Clara Ashley daur 10
Annie Ashley daur 27
William Ashley nephew wid 35
Thomas Ashley 8 no relationship given

all born Liverpool

1901 8 Hope St Edge Hill
james Ashley H M 30 waterproof sheet maker
Clara wife 30
Joseph 10
John 4
Richard 1
all bn Liverpool

I would suggest that Annie in 1881 is James' grandmother.
His mother is Elizabeth of 1881 and 1901 who was widowed before 1881
And that he has siblings Annie bn about 1874 and Thomas bn abt 1876

Then possibly half siblings William and Clara

Ann and William christened at St Nathaniel's on 24 April 1874 of Harding Street parents Thomas and Elizabeth of Harding Street. Father a striker

Also a Charles on 24 August 1879 also of Harding Street

More Ashley children at the church late 1890s early 1900 in the same area all children of a Thomas and Elziabeth

Just wondering if there are 2 Elizabeth Ashley women?

Hi Hilary,
That was quick, thanks. I did wonder about Elizabeth in the 1901 census, thought if I could find James in 1891 it might clear things up a bit. You are probably right about Annie being his Grandmother.

St Nathaniel on Ancestry are also showing the christenings of your James and Clara.

Clara and William Ashley born 5 April 1891 were christened 24 Dec 1899 at st peter's church liverpool

address was Hop Strett and parents given as William and Elizabeth

Seems a bit suspicious why wait so long for the baptism and use a church a good way from your usual church.?

Hi Hilary,
It gets more confusing! Maybe Elizabeth in 1901 census is James’s sister in law. So yes possibly two Elizabeth Ashley’s the other being his mother.

ther's a marriage in June 1868 at St Nicholas, Thomas Ashley, bachelor, to Elizabeth Ashley,spinster, both full age, both living at Leeds Street.. his father Thomas Ashley, Labourer... her father Edward Ashley, Joiner. witnesses Jenkins? Nicholas and Charlotte Williams.

dare I say I did also notice a marriage in Derby 1885 William Ashley to Elizabeth Ashley...

but that's got to be a coincidence hasn't it

Goodness knows I am struggling to work this lot out! Maybe they are just a close knit family! I wonder if Elizabeth is down as a spinster or widow on that marriage certificate?
