Here is the story again!

Thomas Herbert Farrington
In 1901 aged 22 he lived with his family at 3 Cunard Rd. In Oct 1902 he married Adaline Mabel Ward. In 1911 he is shown as living at 24 Redcar Street, Anfield, and Liverpool with his wife, Adaline Mabel and two children Francis John (6) and Isabel (3). It seems that they had previously been living at 36 Irving Street, Litherland as this is shown on Isabel’s birth certificate (1907).

It then gets difficult. The marriage broke up. It seems that THF left his wife with the two children. She is shown as living at 90 Ruskin Street. Adaline took up with the love of her life Charles Reginald Pollimgton. Adaline had two sets of twins with Charles. Edythe and Margaret on 6 May 1913 and Jean and Charles on 25 Jan 1918. Charles only lasted a month. THF subsequently married Alice Olive Jones on 25 Dec 1924 recording himself as a widower.

Charles Reginald Pollington was serving with the Kings Liverpool Regiment and according to his medal card went to France for the first time in 1915. Both Edythe and Margaret were baptized and registered under the name Farrington with the address given as 34 Dewsbury Street. Jean and little Charles were baptized Pollington with the address given as 90 Ruskin St. Jean’s birth certificate is in the name Farrington but the regimental details are for Charles (THF never served in the forces). Charles got badly wounded in France and was evacuated to the Belmont Road Aux Hospital, Liverpool where he contracted pneumonia. He died on 28 Oct 1918 at his family home, Lowther House in Bardney, Lincolnshire and is buried in the Bardney cemetery. His name is recorded on the Bardney War Memorial. Adaline received a message of sympathy from the King and Queen together with an expression of regret from the Army Council at his death in his Country’s service.

It may be that Adaline and her children were quite close to Charles’s parents, Lowther and Louisa. Certainly Louisa taught Frank and Margaret to play the piano. Apparently Margaret became so proficient that she played at Wigmore Hall. Apparently she was the apple of Lowther’s eye. Adaline and her children Frank, Isabel, Edythe and Jean left England travelling 3rd class to South Africa on the Edinburgh Castle on 12 Dec 1919. For some reason, perhaps associated with her music, Margaret was left behind. The family travelled under the name Pollington which they continued to use in South Africa.

My mother, Jean, always regarded her maiden name as Pollington. Indeed she had a British Passport with that name. It was only after years of research that a birth certificate in the Farrington name was discovered.

There are obviously a whole series of facts remaining to be discovered from this story. Some of these are:
• Did Farrington divorce Adaline?
• Did Charles Pollington marry Adaline?
• What happened to Margaret?
• Who looked after Adaline and her family in South Africa. Why did she choose to go there.
• Is there a record of a British pension being paid to Adaline?

Hi Folatre
I'm very pleased to read you managed to get into England. I can remember you were struggling with nationality problems etc.
You've picked a lovely part of the country to settle in.
Thank you for pm and this link. I had missed this for some reason.
I'll go back and catch up with the story.
Cheers and welcome back
Tina :)

Hi Tina,

I have never had nationality problems having served in the British Army for 28 years. I think that you may be confusing me with my cousin Daryl.
It was always my intention to move back to England where my children and grandsons live in Norfolk.
I will now commence my research into the family ancestry, but as you know there are a number of questions remaing a grey area.

Hi Ladies and Gents,

These threads seem to go on and I appologise but that and also thank you for your interest in my family history.

Probably for our best interest we have retired (and resigned from Africa) and now we live in the UK where security is not of prime importance. My hubbys work constantly required him to visit sensitive areas and he ended up getting quite stressed when he should have been winding down in life.

Our dear Margaret has not surfaced again so its just tidying up information already gleaned from your posts. I have however also been trying to get marriage information for her and her Mr Porter from Monteal in Canada where it appears she ran to in 1937 but with no luck so far.

I am also presently trying to clarify the nuts and bolts of the Margaret to George R Cope marriage and their off spring (who also seem to be very elusive).

It also looks like Margaret died in 1950 in Wortley at a young 37 years old. We always suspected that she was a sickly child hence she was left behind in the UK. Margaret and my mom Edythe despite being twins were also baptised a month or so apart so maybe she was also sick at that time as well.

Any new help would be great as I am now having difficulty in seeing the trees in the forest.

Hi Darry

Do you have the death certificate and if so what was her name at the time of her death?
Doreen did find a marriage in Aldershot that may have been hers, you will have to look back through the post for the details.

If you have the death certificate can you post the details.

Do you have Margaret's marriage certificate to Mr Cope? If yes waht does it say? If no I really think you need to purchase it to find out what it says.
