Alice Bello Born 1916/17 Liverpool

Hi guys i have a bit of a dilemma, this ladt is the first first daughter of my grandads sister. Her mother emigrated with her second husband to USA and she was left behind at the age of 2yrs. The 1921 census is so way off is there anyway I can find out where or who she grew up with? or is there school records etc or am I as I think clutching at straws! She wouldnt be in the poll books as a minor.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

First of all have you checked for Divorce papers on the National Archives site? My experience of searching for them gave details of custody of the children to the father. There may be other children listed and also who they would be living with.

It's doubtful that you would be able to access school records since there is possibly a 100 year closure on them.

We have tried to put together a few suggestions for tracing a living relative here http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=8154 and your best way forward might be to find a descendant of Alice who may know some of her history.

The birth for Alice Bello was registered Q1 1917 Liverpool 8b 123, Mother's maiden name Midghall. It would appear that she was an only child.

She appears to have married in 1942 and had two children but these people may still be living so I won't post the details on the public forum.

No probs listing this, no copyright etc. My subs in Anc allow this.

Custodio Bello died on board the SS Swanmore on 25 April 1917. He is remembered on the Tower Hill memorial

The ship was torpedoed 230 miles WMW of Fastnet ireland 11 lifes lost. I found this on the wrecks website.

Just realised this is in Volume 2 of Silent Warriors:
On April 22nd 1917 and at the entrance to the North Channel, U 93 intercepted the full-rigged, iron hulled, Norwegian ship VESTELV (1880 - Henschiens Rederi A/S, Tvedestrand), transporting pitch pine from Mobile, Alabama to Liverpool. This time a scuttling party was sent on board armed with explosive charges, adding 1,729-tons more to the tally!
Pursuing a course down the west coast of Ireland, two days passed before a further opportunity presented itself. By April 25th, having reached her designated operational zone some 200-miles, southwest of Fastnet Rock, a large fast steamer suddenly appeared, heading west. Von Spiegel may have misjudged the steamer’s speed because the torpedo missed, so he surfaced and attacked the ship using the deck gun. Strangely, more shells appeared to be striking the vessel than U 93 was firing – the reason being, U 43 (Hellmuth Jürst) was also blasting away. The steamer finally outpaced them and the two submarines were forced to break off the pursuit. In fact the 6,373-ton SWANMORE, which was armed for defence, had not escaped, because U 50 (Gerhard Berger) was waiting for her and by the end of that day, 230-miles into the Atlantic from Fastnet Rock, the ship was torpedoed without warning and then shelled and sunk. SWANMORE (1913 - Johnston Line Ltd.) was transporting general cargo and ordnance from Baltimore, Maryland for Liverpool and eleven of the crew perished:

I am overwhelmed by your help!
Mary Victoria married a third time in USA and yes another exotic guy pervian Alberto Puente.
I have searched Alices child Antoinette Chung back a while and have there details on genesreunited but cannot get any hits or matches on there. In regards to the electoral roll I will have to check them in October when I will be back in UK (emigrated ot oz 2006)
I have got a marriage and a death reference for a Alice Awang as she may have married a second time.
I just wanted to find out that her family brought her up, how sad to be left behind but I wonder if she did keep in touch with her mother though as she named her second child who died after her

Thanks for the update. When you come in October the Record Office will still be situated in the World Museum next door where it is temporarily while the library is being refurbished.

If you try to visit on a Tuesday afternoon the Society hosts a Help Desk there at 1.30 pm and they will give you whatever assistance they can.

If you have copies of certificates or anything with an address on that will be good since the Electoral Registers are searchable by address only, unless you have an online subscription to 192.com.

Managed to find several ER addresses to write to and found two new relatives too! which is a real bonus, just hope they are as curious as me. Mary was Navarra when she emigrated in 1919 cant wait to show mum her picture when I visit, got it from her passport application in 1919 off ancestry.com

Had more luck in Ancestry by increasing my membership and got copy of the passenger list whichlisted Mary V and her son Alexander Navarra (both deceased) and got a copy of her 1919 passport application.
