COLQUITT / COLQUIT

Hi all, im new to this forum & wonder if anyone on here can help me.
My surnames Colquitt & im trying to find anything on a JOHN COLQUIT born 1702, my ancestor. The only information i have is that he was born in 1702, where unknown, spouse unknown. I do know he had a son THOMAS who was born 11th January 1734 in the St Helens area but baptised at St Peters, Church St Liverpool on the 11th February 1734.
Thomas also had a son again named Thomas born 1759 who married an Elizabeth Winstandley.
I would be gratefull if anyone could share any information on the above. I also cannot find a link to the more famous Colquitt family of Liverpool & if there is any connection?

do you have the possible sibling, Eliz. Colquitt, baptised at St Peter's 28 March 1728 at St Peters, father John.

did your family stay in the St Helens area, or move into Liverpool?

do you know of any siblings to Thomas at all?

I know you are trying to find out about dad, but just looking for any other records that may lead us there

I couldn't find anything this early in Lancs OPC.
In Labs they have the marriage & baptism for Thomas (as Colkquit)
I think most of this site is from pedigree family search.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Have you checked what holdings the St Helens library may have, as there could possibly be land registers or rent books etc.

Wills are something else to look into, although there is an online database for the early wills http://www.xmission.com/~nelsonb/lws.htm I'm not sure any of them relate to your family, however checking others sometimes give clues. I suspect there might be a more comprehensive list at either St Helens or the Lancashire Record Office in Preston.

Have you found out where they are buried and whether there might be a headstone giving details?

Like Simone, I'm just thinking around the subject to get other clues.

Hi, & many thanks for your replies, very helpfull.
I found the link for the wills most interesting & i will have to research some names on there.
The family in 1700`s seemed to live in the St Helens area, but the babys baptised/christined at St Peters in Liverpool, which i dont know the reason why?
That is the only link i have with Liverpool.
I neither have yet found any siblings
I will have to research in more detail at records offices & graves.
Does anyone know where i can find out where these people are buried? or is it a matter of visiting graveyards in the area?

Many people wanted their babies baptised asap so travelled to St Peter's rather than wait for the wandering priest or vicar on his circuit.
The mindset was to have the baby baptised and the mother "churched" as quickly as possible.
It must have been an enormous journey for them but they all seem to have been well organized in the outlying areas.

There are Colquitt's buried & cremated at St Helens cemetery but maybe way before the time frame you are looking for.

St Helens Council also have a searchable database for both burials and cremations http://www.sthelens.gov.uk/lgnl.htm?id=335 but seems to go back only as far as 1811, it seems quite good as if you click the link to the name you also get the age and Grave Reference.

There is also a private website that somebody has compiled using their own visits to St Helens cemetery http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jnpweb/st%20 ... index.html if you are lucky to find one of your own, there may even be a photograph.

For burials at St helen's church St helens you need to look at the parish registers these are at Lancashire Record Office Preston, they are also, I think, on film at St helens Library. The Lancashire Parish Register Society has produced transcription of the regiisters which cover the time you are looking at. Many main libraries have copies of these or you can buy them on CD from the Lancashire Parish Register Society.

You also need to look at the actual entries in the Liverpool Registers has there may be more information in the original such as where they were from and the father's occupation. For this you would probably need to go to Liverpool record office or there may be films held at Huyton library or Lancashire Record Office.

I do not think you will find what you want online.

I would also suggest you look into wills as these may help sort out the family. Lancashire wills before 1858 are held at Lancashire Record Office. Ig you google lancashire wills database you can see what may be available.
