Birkenhead Will

Post by Blue70 »

I'm researching a Manx woman called Harriett Eleanor Caine who died in Birkenhead in 1926. I don't have an Ancestry subscription but I know she is listed in the indexes of Wills on the site. I would have thought that this Will would have been available through the Cheshire website but this Will is not on the database. It's not listed in the Isle of Man Will indexes either. Any ideas?

It was proved at Liverpool so will not be available at Cheshire RO. You will need to apply to York Sub Probate Office for a copy. You can download a form to apply from here. www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm it costs £5 and can take up to 1 month to arrive.

You can see the will in a book at lancashire Record office but they cannot make a copy you may however photograph it.

You could also contact Liverpool Probate Office and see if they can do you a copy.

It's a pity the index doesn't show the Registry since then it would have been clear to you that it would have been Liverpool.

Is the transcript of the index entry any use to you?

Caine Harriett Eleanor of 75 Rice Lane, Wallasey, Cheshire (wife of John James Caine) died 26 February 1926 Probate Liverpool 20 May to Kathleen Juanita Caine, Spinster. Effects £284 10s 11d.

Thanks Mary for the details. This connects to my Manx Will research. My ancestor was the oldest son but he got a sum of money like his siblings and two unmarried sisters got the house. One of the unmarried sisters who inherited the family home in the Isle of Man died in Birkenhead the same place as her married sister Harriett. She probably sold the house and went to live with her sister. Harriett may have inherited her sister's money. This seems like a lot of money to be given in a Will for that time.

Thanks Hilary. I go regularly to the local library for my Ancestry records it was just bad timing that I wanted to find an Ancestry record on a Sunday. My FMP subscription runs out in December I'll probably swap over to Ancestry in December. The new Liverpool parish records in particular has won me over.

Hi,
From the National Archives' currency value comparison site..
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/curr ... ts.asp#mid

In 1925, £284 10s 11d would have the same spending worth of today's £8,527.84
That's a fair sum!
